bruh I'm a radical leftie. Your view of cancel culture seems to be very romanticized. I mean sure its good in isolation that marginalized people get more cultural power through the internet (if that is even happening, I'm not final on that yet). At the end of the day cancel culture is just mob rule of mostly terminally online people though. Its often fueled by a feeling of perceived moral superiority and its intoxicating to be able to participate in the downfall of others the mob has deemed as a terrible person, which is not a healthy hobby to have, i actually don't like lynchings either. Many of those people are the same who would have partaken in the stonings you mentioned. Sure a good number of the people who get #cancelled probably deserved it and really did something reprehensible but i see a lot more of just useless leftie infighting and purity testing in my circles who fight and cancel people over completely inane shit. I don't know about you but when i think of a socialist society, which is what i do want to see, i don't envision a rabid online mob of people going around and trying to ruin peoples lives for some little mistake or even worse, based on false information.

I mean this band is a clear example of getting punished by the hate mob online after they had already been imprisoned on false charges during a tour in a foreign country.

I believe in institutions, not people. I believe in institutional justice, not mob rule. Sure your specific experience in america is that the justice system is completely broken, monetized and deeply racist. I would not swing to the other extreme because of that though. Institutions need to be reformed.

i mean our views on social issues seem to be aligning but we have a different idea of what cancel culture's role in the combatting of those issues plays. I don't think its very productive, at least not in its current iteration.

I guess i also have to differentiate between actual crimes and social justice here. I am unequivocally for social justice of course and I have no problem with people losing their jobs over some bigoted shit they said or did. There should be social repercussions for being an open transphobe. That is one thing.

But when it comes to the cancel culture mob, that has its own dynamic which often quickly spins out of control and overshoots the goal of social justice completely.

if you aren't active on twitter you probably won't realize the extent of the situation which is honestly great for you because twitter is a pretty terrible place outside of artists being able to promote their art there and it has only become worse quickly since musk took power.

And yes my frame of reference is that of someone who lives in the United States of America.
