i mean i can barely even decide on whether i prefer the hatful of hollow version of this charming man or the version from tmhe s/t
"
I'll make up your mind for you. Hatful version.
As for the album I'm not that into the Smiths but I guess this one's ok.

the real fake one, yes
Uhh basically look at any band from the 80s on my favourites list and you will find something that was an influence, contemporary or result of the Smiths. Billy Bragg, Aztec Camera, the Housemartins, of course Morrissey himself (though his material a huge letdown from the Smiths), then more obvious bands like the Cure and REM. Seriously I have listened every podunk British band vaguely described as Smiths-esque from the Lotus Eaters to Orange Juice to Prefab Sprout but they won't match the Smiths so absorb everything they ever released first (except the song "Meat is Murder" which I wholeheartedly advise is shit)

Thanks man, I actually mean it when I mean I know just about nothing like this, Interpol's probably the closest, but after that there's nothing. So Ill probably check out the Cure and REM (Joy Division too I think) and check out the others if I want to go on from there.
Is this considered post-punk?

You could call it post-punk but they're way too melodic and conventional to really fit that label. British people call it indie, Americans probably call it alternative rock. I call them a pop band.
If you really know nothing of this type of music, those are great bands to start with.

Hmm alright cool thanks I've never been able to get a good idea of what is and isn't post-punk.

Joy Division and something like Gang of Four are to my ears the nexus of post-punk but I'm sure others would disagree. I've heard everything from Elvis Costello to Bauhaus to Duran Duran described as post-punk so who really knows.

Solid album, I can't say I understand why its held in such high regard but its still pretty good. The title track and big mouth... kick ass, but every time I listen to this I feel like I might as well just listen to one of the cure's poppy-er (I have no idea how to spell this) albums instead.
