I mean I kind of agree this is too long for this type of sound, but really amazing songs if you pick them

I don't mind the length, but I'll admit all the good songs are in the first half basically

After listen four my prevailing sense is that they would have been better off just releasing this as two albums, concentrating all the great material onto one disc and the meh to good stuff onto another, much as they did with Depression Cherry and Thank Your Lucky Stars. I think if you cherry-picked the best 9 songs here you’d get a single album that would probably be my 3rd favorite behind DC and TD and the leftovers would still be a decent album somewhere in the mid-low end their discog. As is we’re left with a super long album with a lot of great material but that fails to justify its length. The EP approach mitigates this somewhat but not as much as just making it two albums (or one “real” albums and one outtakes set) might have. I will say that the great material is decently well spread out among the first 3 chapters and the last one is the only one that feels noticeably weaker overall (until you get to the closer).

Uh, self titled song, Superstar, Through Me, Sunset, Only You Know, Masquerade, New Romance, The Bells, Hurts to Love, Modern Love Stories...
Not really a bad track here, but those are the highlights

Second disc has heaps of great songs - Sunset, Only You Know, Masquerade, Finale, Hurts to Love, Modern Love Stories...
The only non-essential track in my view is The Bells, and it's not that it's bad - it isn't - it's great, but it's the only track that sounds older; I could easily see it in the back half of Bloom, or even on Devotion.
Everything else has elements I haven't heard before from Beach House.

I really enjoy how a bunch of the later tracks sound like Devotion-era songs on steroids

Yeah, I rated chapter 1 a 3.5 on release and yup, the rest not as good so a 3.0 seems right

My ranking's the same as Boney, except for that EP 4 is my favorite or second favorite. The whole first EP, Runaway, New Romance, Sunset, Only You Know, The Bells, Hurts to Love, Many Nights, and Modern Love Stories are the highlights for me. EP 4 especially is pure bliss.
