@botb Basically, yeah.

I suppose a bit like what we say with artists like Mumford & Sons with folk music but Silk Sonic is far more enjoyable in my opinion.

Maybe Leon Bridge's album Good Thing would have some Silk Sonic adjacent 70's inspired pop? It's hard to pin down. Saadiq is more less pop but driven by the same inspirations. Not sure if that'll do the trick.

I don't think they're sonically far off enough from influences for me to buy that argument. I think the fact that all of their aesthetics pretty much wholesale rip off the 70s doesn't really help things either.

I have this problem with Mars' later work in general. I don't love her music, but I think Dua Lipa's last record is an example of actually trying to modernize old sounds in the way you're talking about.

I mean it’s very tongue in cheek. Both of these guys, especially Paak, are known to utilize humor in their music. You really think Bruno Mars thinks that pencil mustache makes him look not ridiculous?

the problem isn't originality or revitalizing the soul aestheric, it's that they do absolutely nothing compelling with it

there's flashes of "yea...do that some more!" and then it sinks back into middling pastiche. it feels like nearly the whole of the retro trend nowadays is guilty of this

I think it's compelling for the reasons botb touched on. It's all in good fun. They're very self aware.

now, now, colton, you don't have to be a musician to have a valid opinion on music

(of course, speaking as a musician, it would make someone sexier if they were)

@normaloctagon

Not necessarily. I don't think there's anything surprising with the low ratings here. Sure, I think the album is all in good fun and that factors into my enjoyment but at the end of the day, it's not an eye-opening listen. It's just fun 70's soul pastiche played in modern pop sensibilities. It just depends on which side of the coin you fall on.
