Jinjer might have a better vocalist on paper, but I prefer Courtney in every way imaginable. Sometimes it’s not about raw talent, but how you incorporate yourself into the music. Jinjer suffers in that department for me while this blends seamlessly with the band.

But I also understand why people prefer Jinjer. No issues with that.

I am surprised at just how much Sam Carter is in yellow jacket. I like his vocals but it’s a little much

It’s the worst part of the album. Feels like we have 11 SB songs and 1 from Architects. Wanted more of Courtney.

yeah, Yellowjacket didn't live up to my expectations. but the Sun Killer to Yellowjacket run is great. also wish Holy Roller just stayed a stand-alone single because it's been out for over a year and i'm a little burnt out from it.

but overall, there isn't a song on here that I would skip. my favourites are Sun Killer, The Summit, Silk in the Strings, and Circle With Me

Yellow jacket has some really catchy parts. I was hoping for Courtney to sing one of the choruses herself though

Releasing 41% of the songs up to a year before the album comes out is risky, though a great way to get their music out there. I find it negatively impacts the listening experience once the full album comes out. I dig it, but the major over production and auto tune on the vocals is a real bummer.

I'd rather listen to Yellowjacket instead of Circle With Me or Hurt You tbh

Honest question, why is "over-producing" a bad thing? I didn't notice an atrocious amount of auto-tune on Courtney's voice (like 99% of singers are autotuned by the way, and it's not usually their choice if they're working with a big producer or label) and I just thought everything sounded very punchy and clear. In their 2017 EP my biggest complaint was that Courtney's voice was too thin and gets drowned out in the busier parts of songs like Mara Effect. Everything feels a lot fatter here and since we're throwing 9 string breakdowns in here, I think that's a good thing.

Its not inherently bad, its personal preference. Some people dont like things so polished and stuff

"why is 'over-producing' a bad thing?"

the perfect example is the comparison between the most recent Spiritbox album and Jinjer album. Some may prefer Wallflower because the production is lot more gritty and bombastic, where as some may prefer Eternal Blue production which is more sleek and streamlined. All personal preference at the end of the day.

Yea, it's preference. To me, sometimes the vocals are produced to a level where they lose a the human element. It's still cool and catchy, but it enters an aesthetic I do not prefer for my heavy non-electronic music. There are records where it is as a stylistic choice, but here it's too subtle to be that kind of thing and too much not to be noticed. And it's not that I don't believe Courtney can sing in tune. Maybe it due to laziness or cost efficiency in the studio. But even if there are good reasons, I still don't like it

the biggest bummer for me coming into this was already knowing the last two songs. Ruins the ending even if Constance is my favorite

These are fair points, and I know it ultimately comes down to personal preference, but I was just curious to pick some brains since that's a criticism that doesn't really resonate with me. But I also am a big whore for "over-produced" bands like Periphery or anything Devin Townsend does. I love bombastic production, layers, and crisp, clean playing. Black metal and grindcore have never done it for me so "raw" production is whatever to me for the most part.

Also, I feel like "autotune" is becoming shorthand for "multi-tracked reverbed vocals" since auto-tune doesn't heavily correct actual pitch as much as it can compress the performance to a consistent level. Like maybe Courtney's voice falters a tiny bit during the take but it can be fixed. I'm not an audio engineer so I could just be talking out of my ass, but auto-tune, from how I understand it, is usually used more in a drum-trigger way than a catch-all fix for bad pitch.

I mean she sounds exactly the same live and in the one-take videos on YouTube so it doesn’t really bother me
