Not as good as their previous efforts but this album is a definite grower.

VOLA's works have always been growers for me. At this point, I actually find Witness more engaging than Inmazes, though I do still agree with the general consensus that Applause is the better album overall.
It's actually pretty impressive how far VOLA are able to push a single idea in a song. That tightness really differentiates them from the rest of the (kinda wanky) prog scene for me.

Yeah their general lack of wankery is great and helps separate them from the others.

There's a lot to despise here. That's probably a me thing. I stamp "guilty pleasure" on records/bands in my head that I think would sound goofy/awkward to the people in my life who don't listen to anything outside of pop and 90's hits. It taints a lot of first listens, which leads me to rediscover gold months or years down the road. This is a perfect example of one that I was able to salvage right off the bat. Second listen was like a different record when I stopped judging it and just had fun. Now I love it.

Second half is just as strong.
Inside your fur is as good as Straight Lines
Stone Leader is on par with Head Mounted Sideways
Future Bird is better IMO than 24 Light years
Napalm is almost on par with These Black Claws, not quite as good though
Then freak in the middle.

I expected it to be my aoty, but was really disappointed when I listened to it the first time. I guess the first half of the album being just the singles ruined the experience for me. If they had shuffled the songs up a bit I think I might've been more enthusiastic. Maybe I'd even be blown away if I hadn't listened to the singles, because 24 LY and Straight Lines really are straight up amazing songs.
I also don't like fade outs (unless it's the last song on the album), and boy, oh boy, there are a lot of them on here.
Still a 3.5 though.

Yeah fade outs are basically when the band can't figure out how to end the song.

forgetting that fade outs are in itself a way to end a song and also an artform
