I know Trey likes it but man I think "Transient" is pretty bad aside from the catchiness in the chorus.

Yeah the first 3 tracks feel like they are from a different album entirely. Stanne's singing is by far the best it's ever been and it carries a lot of these songs. The riffs are predictably weak on most tracks but that's been standard for like 10 years now so I can't be surprised given how Johan and Chris didn't have much input on songwriting. Without the solos you can't really tell the difference between Niklas/Martin and Johan/Chris which says a lot.
With that said, there's something here that's intensely interesting and Trey got at it in the review: this melancholic, dark, melodic tone in a lot of these songs that is entirely different than what I expected. It's not always there and kind of a je ne sais quoi kind of thing but when Stanne's cleans come in and the keys become more moody i.e. the "Ego Deception" chorus I'm absolutely hooked - I need to hear more of this. It's Projector-esque but I think this sounds a bit different. I said I wanted some innovation or improvement and it might actually be here. Really surprised I'm saying that.
I would have replaced two of the three leadoff tracks with "Failstate" and the bonus track "Empires Lost to Time" and made the other bonus track "In Truth Divided" the closer of the album.
"Standstill" and "Ego Deception" are jams.

Yeah I feel like the first 3 tracks could have been on Fiction, where the rest feels like that natural progression they've been after since Projector.

Once again, the bonus tracks are killer. They should have been part of the album

I was thinking the exact same thing. Time to resort to the power of playlists

I wouldn't mind if Mikael went 100% cleans for an album

I Found it very weird how they decided to release Phantom Days as their first single and opener for such an album. Really gives the wrong impression.
I also don't think I heard a single double bass pattern during the whole album..?

In truth divided is the closer on the album, it's not one of the bonus tracks. IIRC somebody somewhere messed up the tracklisting, but the actual bonus tracks would be tracks 13 and 14.
