but the new song, "Polacrilex Kid" is really dope. loving the patient, rowdy slow-burner vibe of the new album

"Can you hate yourself and still deserve love?" hit me like a fuvking boulder at 100mph speed goddamn

“Best post punk band”
I wanted to disagree at first but I couldn’t think of another current band going as strong as them rn lol

Those Maruja fellas might be if they keep the energy up

They honestly don't sound that post-punk to me. Great group though

they're a healthy mishmash

New album so far sounds both like a return to Under Color and a continuation of Ultimate Success Today

"New album so far sounds both like a return to Under Color and a continuation of Ultimate Success Today"
Can definitely hear the Under Color vibes returning.

There are some pacing and production dissonance on the album, which make it a bit jarring to me, but ultimately some songs are absolutely classic Prot

Off the first few spins, absolutely love
"Elimination Dances"
"Fun in Hi Skool"
"Let's Tip the Creator"
"3800 Tigers"
"Polacrilex Kid"
"The Author"
Just wish some of the songs went on for a bit longer. Some just seem to fizzle out too soon or without a satisfying payoff.

for me:
make way
fun in hi skool
graft vs house
polacrilex kid
we know the rats
rain garden
im digging it quite a bit. wish the bass was higher on elimination dances

I am glad they managed to string a record together at all, considering their situation, but this does raise a bunch of "I wish" ideas
|
| |
whats their situation?
checking new one out now. RiD is one of my favorite albums in the last decade, but this one didnt stick with me nearly as much

Need to give it more listens but I'm giving Formal Growth the lightest 4 for now, with the potential to bump down to 3.5. No track jumped out to me as feeling incredibly poignant and arresting like many of their songs have before. But I love this band so I gotta spend more time with it, for sure. Could have not been paying enough attention.
"whats their situation?"
He may be speaking of something else, but the way I understand it, they're always teetering on the edge of calling it quits or at least a hiatus since they don't make enough money doing this shit. Sad thing, because lots of much worse groups get more success. These guys should be as big as IDLES. Bigger even.
|
| |
So basically
They quit their jobs around RiD, so they could really mame this a viable career, but then right after UST, covid happened. They basically went totally broke with this, as all their money was invested into it, eventually having to go back to dayjobs. And yes, "teetering on the edge of calling it quits or at least a hiatus".
There was an interview or sth a while back where one of the members said sth like "we have to record one bit at a time with long intervals" cause they're stringing the funds together as they go. Streaming ain't paying shit and touring would mean extensive breaks from their dayjobs. So break in income with unclear probability of payoff

This CBS interview makes me think they're back to doing it full time.
