i agree that the buildup itself might be better than the end but not in a way that makes the end even slightly disappointing. it's fucking huge and the buildup is just perfection

I almost wonder if people are hyping that buildup so much because the rest of the album is so monotone.

I like both albums about equally and they're not very comparable, but I'd say C&L definitely has stronger, more memorable melodies, don't think that's really Phoebe's strongsuit. Very delicate, deliberate songwriting, on the other hand. And very thoughtful structuring that make her albums seem almost narratively driven.

I think that's what I get caught up in as a filmmaker--the narrative elements of her albums are so stupidly easy to sink into, it's why it takes me so long to get my thoughts together on them

she should open every album she makes with similar chords to smoke signals

Just realized how similar Moon Song and Big Black Heart are. It was driving me nuts trying to figure out which song was stuck in my head and it was BOCC, haha

C&L absolutely wrecks from a songwriting perspective. I listened to this like an hour ago and I still couldn't sing any of it to you aside from the singles I'd heard before a bunch

tbh tho I think the last 3 years have been a process of me discovering that Im more of a "smoke signals" and "motion sickness" fan than a Phoebe Bridgers fan

Stranger is superb melodically. "Smoke Signals," "Motion Sickness" and esp "Georgia" are deeply arresting. This is really pretty but has few really arresting moments save the closer.

You're right about Georgia, forgot about that one. The thing about SitA is that none of the songs ever grew on me, either I loved them on first listen or I never liked them. On first listen of this I only really like Kyoto and the closer.

Georgia is a perfect song

lmao why is there like 3 pages complaining about "weak melodies"? is that really your take away from this? I'd have to agree with neekafat that some highly lauded records could just be as easily dismissed for this very same reason
sometimes sputnik do be acting like a collective hivemind smh
