Yeah it’s often firmly in elevator music territory. The quality control and sequencing is all over the place, even in the context of their own ultimately uninspiring material. Throwing shit at a wall and seeing what sticks.
Maybe this will open up a load of new music to the kids of today though, so there’s a potential positive, right?
I just finished this and the closer is indeed the best song.

I definitely feel the general lack of charm to these lyrics and an absence of atmosphere makes this album less engaging overall

Been listening to Rowan's compilation of the two albums and it's fantastic.

Followed rowan on Spotify cause he's a real 1

"Roadkill" is straight up a Pinegrove song, and I'm choosing to take it as a parody. Made me laugh when the melody really kicked in

i do wish this guys would just stick to one sound cause i think they could succeed with their takes on new-wave/britpop stuff
I'd argue they have a fantastic albums worth of it spread throughout their discog

After every 1975 record I've always felt they need to be told by their label that their next album must be no longer than 40 mins and contain no interludes.
Everything they have done has had some really good stuff completely smothered by filler.
This is them doubling down on past mistakes, it would seem

This record is 1) derivative of many other bands works, 2) a mess of styles that aren’t cohesive and 3) 80 minutes long with a bunch of filler.
They hit some high notes on the songs that seem true to form: “Me and You Together Song” and “Frail State of Mind”.
Instead of Radiohead this time, they took a page out of later material Third Eye Blind on nearly every composition, and you can go track by track and guess which band they are currently emulating; Jamie Lenman on “People”, Bon Iver on “Jesus Christ 2005”, How to Dress Well on “Yeah I Know”, Baths on “Frail State”, etc.
This band just seems way inflated. A work of marketing genius without enough substance to pull off the pop-to-experimental maturation that a band like the Beatles was capable of. The 1975 is still at their best doing these little saccharine pop rock tunes they enjoyed on I Like it When You Sleep. They aren’t ready to reinvent themselves in the way they want to, this record is proof of that.

You really think they're copy Jamie Lenman of all people? C'mon man get out of your bubble - also not every acoustic ballad has anything to do with Bon Iver. Have you heard Bon Iver in like 8 years? he hasn't sounded like that for almost a decade

You're right about the derivative of other bands but your picks are very weird... The clearest to me are Roadkill = Pinegrove and Jesus Christ = Phoebe Bridgers (I know she sings on it but the melodies are so her)

I didn't get Bon Iver vibes from Jesus Christ 2005, I did get them from Don't Worry, though, which has the aura of i,i.

I don't know what it is with this band. Based on my typical tastes and stances, I should absolutely despise them. For some reason they are a massive guilty pleasure of mine. I cannot place it.

Well that’s that then. One of the best blokes here is now dead to me.

I would probably really hate them if I lived in the UK. They are not anywhere near relevant where I live, so there is no fatigue factor.

I think it’s more the ‘see-through’ regurgitated nonsense these clones peddle while inflicting their substance-less drek to the masses that is the real shit grip. Promoted by the media as if they are pioneers and spokespersons of a generation. The cunts mum was in coronation street for fuck sake.
