there are a few songs on the tail end of the album that haven't clicked for me yet, but the rest is 4.5-5/5 type stuff

Ngl I haven't been returning to this much outside of Describe, On The Floor, and Nothing At All, but those songs are truly incredible and are up there with my very favorites from No Shape.

I can't listen to Whole Life mostly because it makes me cry

Rather easily his least impressive album. It could easily not even be perfume genius. The subject matter in the songs is completely uninteresting (really, reading that feature on pitchfork made the songs seem so dumb and self-obsessed) and the lyrics are significantly weaker than past releases. This is his generic art pop record. It’s still good but nowhere near as special as any previous release

i kind of agree, tbh. I much prefer no shape over this. The slower tracks do nothing for me. Moonbend is awful, among his worst.

side b is particularly weak. I could only play side a and not miss out on anything. sadly.
or side c and d whatever it actually is I have it on cd not vinyl - last half

Well I do like to bottom

Without You might as well be a Great Big Sea song

If there was at least a mild semblance of aesthetic coherence here, preferably in line with stuff like Your Body Changes Everything, there might be something to enjoy but as is its an identity-less, jumbled mess ranging from Teen Dreamy Lynchian Roadhouse Ballads to Hallelujah Boomer Granola Mom Folk Fest Hand Swayers.
the chorus of Nothing At All straight up sounds like a modern reimagination of that fucking jesus song Here I Am To Worship.

I swear if no one knew he was gay you'd find this in the 'christian music' section
