I feel like the production is downright incredible on the new album, which when combined with Angel's voice gives it the feeling that it should be an earth mover of an LP -- but the songs themselves just aren't doing it for me somehow. It's a strong 3.5 for now but I'm hoping it'll grow because I like Olsen a lot and stylistically Big Time should be right up my alley.

Haha tbh it’s not that bad, I love her at her best but she can be kind of hit or miss. That said My Woman and her Strange Cacti EP are also essential, I feel like you’d love both of those (especially the latter which is raw/stripped down folk but oh so beautiful and very underrated/overlooked).

I'll probably check them both at some point, I'm just terrible at backtracking through discogs when my brain is so presently focused when it comes to music.

Yeah, I’m in the same boat, it’s been especially tough this year with so much stuff dropping. The rest of June is looking kind of light on major releases though so I’m hoping to do some backlog stuff though even that will still be mostly 2022 stuff.

Anyone gunning to review Big Time?

I love Olsen from My Woman onward but for some reason her discography has been tough for me to get into when backtracking. The music is good, but it seems so.....pitch black and keeps me at arm's reach. I'll try again one day, but her recent stuff being so good makes it hard to wander from them

Felt a lot more lukewarm on Big Time on second listen… It’s gorgeous but kind of bland a decent amount of the time. I feel like it’s begging for another more energetic track or two.

was gonna check the new one today and then I read this paragraph in AVC's review
"Over the course of the pandemic, Olsen grappled with her sexuality, entering a same-sex relationship only to see it to end in stomach churning heartbreak. After coming to terms with her newfound identity, Olsen finally built up the courage to come out to her parents, who welcomed the revelation with open arms. This relief would soon turn into grief, though, as both her mother and father died soon after."
yeah holy shit. not tryina ruin my whole week atm sorry angel

to be fair it’s def not some A Crow Looked At Me shit, it’s catchy and poppy, many of the songs could pass as niche modern love songs if ur just kind of catching things she says instead of focusing on each line

all of that being said tho, that heavy context you pointed out makes it better 4 me

liked this one a decent bit, but really not a fan of any of her other stuff. about to dive into her new one with no expectations
|

so far, it's really good. feels like a modern take on the laurel canyon sound, for which i'm a sucker. her voice is the perfect match for it. really warm and lovely

If I really love the t/t on this, will I like the new one, folks?
"After coming to terms with her newfound identity, Olsen finally built up the courage to come out to her parents, who welcomed the revelation with open arms. This relief would soon turn into grief, though, as both her mother and father died soon after."
Also, this is brutal, holy shit. Poor girl.

I wouldn't say anything on the new one is quite like the t/t here. What are your thoughts on the last couple tracks on this one? Those are probably the closest to Big Time stylistically.
Edit: Actually listening just now, I guess "Go Home" doesn't sound too different from this one's opener and the t/t, try that one out I guess.
