Really, really enjoyed this. Has way more staying power than the last album, which I lost interest in after a few listens

Same here. I’ve never returned to a Borknagar album as much as this one.

I feel the opposite. Don't like this nearly as much as Urd or Winter Thrice.

My second favorite is definitely Winter Thrice, but for me it doesn't have the staying power of this.

Winter Thrice doesn't have "Up North" and that's the long and the short of it.

Great review Trey, thumbs up! Completely agree that the vocal harmonies are great but for me the lack of memorable riffs (or riffs at all on many tracks) and the dull mixing of the drums kind of ruin the experience. Flawed but good.

Thanks. I do wish the drums were more powerful, but I definitely dig the rest of the music.

Certain vocal passages give me chills on this one. Pretty much anytime he slips back into growls after clean passages.

Didn't think having Vortex doing lead vox would shake-up the sound this much, but damn..

Vortex has always been amazing. He never gets as much credit as he deserves.

I've liked him since his work with Dimmu way back when. Loved his cleans, but I didn't think he could carry songs with screams and growls to this extent. It's a pleasant surprise.

I went back to some of the older Borknagar albums to see if I could get into them more now since this one is so good and I'm kind of on a Borknagar kick... nope.

This is about a 3.5 for me, which is disappointing cause I love the band. Not as disappointing as the new Leprous is to me, at least.

No way. This is one of Borknagar's best. Easily their most diverse, at least. The new Leprous... I really like it, but I know it divided the fans.

Up North might be the best metal song I heard this year.
Fucking thing is like a metal hymn.
