This is going to have to carry the summer for me - is it just me or does the release schedule really dry up after this week?

“Underwater” is really poorly placed. They shouldn’t have dipped their toes into interludes.

‘I will love you like there’s razors in it...and she will love you like a raaad-iant flame’
The ending of ‘Hey Rosey’ makes the much maligned ending of ‘Heavenfaced’ sound like ‘Hey Jude’ by comparison. What guff.

“Light Years” is perfect as the closer though.

‘Light Years’ is better in this context - might bump to a 3.5 track rating and top 5 here.
It also made the cut on ‘I am easy to Beast’- the mark of a champion tune

Interesting this review should bring up the ‘bigger and better stages’ bit. I saw these guys play one of the most beautiful venues in the world at some garbage indie festival and it was like spitting tobacco into a jewel encrusted chalice

A step down from SWB but still a really great effort. This shares the dreary, mellow aspects of TWFM but is still very much a departure for them. I’ve listened three times so far and while I really enjoy most of it, I don’t see it ever being better than the previous five.

I like this better than SWB. I don't know. Never could fully connect with that album; something felt off.
I'm through 3 listens and really impressed with it. Production sounds really good.
Let's see how it holds up with time.

I think this album confirms they don't really have any gas left in the tank. All the songs are forgettable. Everything is kind of off, from the "celebrity arty photo shoot" album cover, to the clunky lyrics, zero build or point to the songs, and overly smooth production. The duets concept was good, I really wish it had worked, but the songs aren't there.
It looks like they'll never get to the heights of Boxer or Alligator again. I'd be happy if they even had another High Violet in them, but this doesn't seem to be the case. It used to drive me nuts when people would describe them as boring, but I guess they're boring now.

There’s not quite enough ideas for the whole runtime, I definitely agree with an earlier comment that they used so many guest singers to compensate.

They said they’ll take a long break after this I think. It’s well deserved after 25-30 songs in 5 years and all the touring.

I sure hope the hell not. I love this new direction after such a somber previous album.

I did think they were ready for ‘new projects’ after SWB which was a slightly clunky album boosted by six or seven excellent songs.
I really think their talents would be better served parting ways now. Matt is running on empty in this framework - let him do a full duet album over disco beats. Let the Dessners do soundtrack chin stroke’y stuff or guest on other people’s albums.
Let the drummer fucking drum with the ol’ passion.
Let the other dude...Er, be. Let him be.
