approaching this as a pop album just because it doesn't sound like her other records on the surface is like approaching the electric guitar records of Bob Dylan as rock and roll albums. Yea, that's how they sound like on the surface. But the 'tag' we put under the music is not the most important aspect of its identity.
Using Dylan as an example of a musician with a distinct personality and songwriting, not to put Bob and Sharon in the same level.

@boney, nah I’m just giving you and Doof a hard time. Glad you’re a fan but this doesn’t seem like something that’d be up his alley lol.

'Glad you’re a fan but this doesn’t seem like something that’d be up his alley lol.'
I have over 6000 albums rated.
I rated this a '3' which means I think it's at least 'good music' plus I've also said I like a few of the toons here quite a lot.
I rated her previous album a 3.5.
It's established on this site that 'doofcore' is folk and indie.
If this isn't my alley it's pretty close to my alley :/

Yeah SVE is pretty Doofcore - in fact I think Are We There may have been the first album I ever recommended to you.

Definitely one of the first - I do need to listen to the two albums before this one again. I have 'Tramp' on a 3 and I'm thinking it might deserve a bump depending how I find it now

Tramp is due a revisit from me too, been forever since I spun that one.

3 is a funny rating for me - I have over a thousand of them now, you scan through them on RYM and it wouldn't pain me to pick up any of those albums and give them a spin.
So 3 definitely isn't an insulting rating for me...but it's an honest reaction, they're albums that don't beg for repeat plays. If they did they'd probably go up.
'Serpents' still sounds great.

Agreed, 3s can be funny - sometimes it's "ah this is pretty good!", sometimes it's "meh, it's good". 3s probably have the highest range of spins for me, some I've listened to once or twice max, some probably dozens depending on the artist.

am I the only one loving the opening track here?

It's partly my fault for starting a new account and splitting my ratings.
Then again no one ever checks ratings here ;D

Definitely, there's some old 'fallen out of favour' 3s from way back that started life as 3.5-4's and I've spun to death...and a 3 is also the classic one listen placeholder 'will return before the year finishes' for new albums

Atari - the opener is the one here that feels most like her previous work, it's a decent intro but there's not much to it imo.

half way through 'Tramp' and the weakness is there...it is a bit one toned, esp vocally (the use of the backing vox in particular)

"the opener is the one here that feels most like her previous work"
that's probably why I like it more. Early favorites: I Told You Everything, Seventeen, Hands and Stay

Yeah the opener is great. It took me a few listens to appreciate that one but now it's among my favourites
