"Aviary" is actually not Holter's fifth, but her sixth album. If for whatever reason you choose not to count "In The Same Room" as an album of hers, as it includes newly recorded versions of previously released songs, please note that one was not only recorded in a studio (RAK London, not in concerts, as a live album), but it is also not a compilation of any sort (similar to Paul Simon's "In The Blue Light", which is simply counted as another studio album), but was released and intended as an album specifically.

This seems like the type of thing my artsy friends would be into. Not feeling it much, seems a little too out-there.

The way she writes her songs on this album reminds me of Debussy/turn-of-the-20C Impressionism

“The structure of Debussy’s music often resembles a mosaic: seemingly separate and self-enclosed units combine into larger configurations, the individual discontinuities thereby being dissolved into a continuous, unbroken flow. The dynamic thrust toward points of climactic emphasis, typical of German music of the time, is replaced by a sort of floating balance among subtly interconnected musical entities, giving rise to wavelike motions characterized by extremely fine gradations of color, pacing, and intensity.” Robert P. Morgan

although Holter definitely retains her “climaxes,” but I think the structure is distinct from what we’re used to in terms of “emphasis”. Damn what an artist

it’s amazing how seemlessly she can find a tune, like on the back half of “Under the Moon,” but songs like “Chaitius” and “Everyday is an Emergency” are particularly painful in their formlessness.
