"Imagine thinking Scream Aim Fire is that good of a record to begin with when the band themselves will admit that it was literally meant to "prove critics wrong about them.""
Imagine thinking this matters

Yeah, imagine thinking artistic integrity matters. Watch an interview regarding this album. They literally tried to go heavier and it didn't feel honest to them. Actually, read up on older interviews as well, that's how I realized just how dishonest a record like Scream Aim Fire was in comparison.
Scream Aim Fire is weak (imho) because most of its tracks go at least a minute too long and they tried too hard to be "real metal." Fever should've been their 2nd release, it would've been a more natural progression from The Poison that wasn't marred by them caring what the critics thought.
This record's not amazing, but consider that this was meant for them to air out their frustrations and inner turmoil, somewhat to Metallica's "St. Anger." At least Gravity's mostly a coherent release, even if a little mellower. Tracks like Under Again, The Very Last Time, Coma, and Breathe Underwater still manage to impact my mood in a way that NOTHING from Scream Aim Fire EVER did.

St. Anger is an underrated album tbqh

I don't give two hoots about what the band says about the album, it bangs like a mf.
And it doesn't make sense that that album is something you would call weak.
Not even a slight it just doesn't make sense based off of your taste.

@CaliggyJack: I don't hate St. Anger, but it's definitely a pretty sloppy effort. Many tracks suffer from the usual Metallica issue of overlong feeling - Death Magnetic has that issue as well, but to a much more tolerable extent thanks to having more going on instrumentally. Not to mention, whatever the hell "Purify" is.
@Drifter: I think I've already explained. Most tracks go on for 30 seconds to a minute too long - really, the only tracks that DON'T suffer from that are the title track, Eye of the Storm (although even with its more restrained 4 minute runtime, it's still a borefest) Waking the Demon, Disappear, and Last to Know. Long songs aren't inherently a problem, but they just don't do it well on that record at all. Alone, Tears Don't Fall, The End, and Bittersweet Memories all do that better than whatever "Deliver Us from Evil" or "Forever and Always" could offer. Musically, it may be more impressive technically, but the writing itself lacks a lot of the feeling I got from The Poison.

I don't care that this band says in interviews too, because they're often very dishonest imo

They worked with the guy behind Massive Attack, I'm sure they were trying to come up with a new way to express themselves tbh.

Shallow ear candy, but not offensively bad, just not good or pleasant enough imo. 2 seems appropriate

yea a 2 isn't a bad rating for this if you're not a fan, I'm stuck between updating my review and bumping it to a 3.5 and keeping it at a 3.

I think it's interesting how at first, I wasn't a huge fan of this. It straddled between a 2.5 and a 3 for me. But it's definitely grown on me, as much as I'd love to nitpick every flaw the music speaks to me in a way that I don't think most people realize.
