Dewi if I had to pick a fave at the min I’d go with Doorway but the album is top to bottom essential in my eyes.

Towing the Lines ‘The old man is a painter of tired seascapes

Tired of adventure’ is an absolute Adam’s Apple Crusher for me at the min cos of personal stuff.

The only songs I'm not in love with are 'What the Moon Does' (it's okay, the final minute is better than the rest of the song), and Boat to an Island Pt 2 (I've never been keen on the drone ambient stuff). But the rest of this draws me in to Howard's world every time.

i think i'd section the tracks thusly:

5/5

nica libres at dusk

someone in the doorway

murmurations

---

4.5/5

towing the line

a boat to an island on the wall

the defeat

agatha's song

---

4/5

what the moon does

there's your man

but yeah i'm finding a lot of richness in this, great thematics and callbacks

I can totally get behind your partitioning. Personally I like Towing and Boat to be in that top section as well, though.

Just finished my first listen and I have to admit this guy is a genius. Probably his best work

I can see this myself giving this a 4.5 with more listens. Second listen is already better than the first.

Would this be good to jam first without getting into his earlier work?

I would check his albums in order to see the evolution, throw in the Burgh Island EP as well. then you've heard his actual best work too

I don't mean to declare lol, I'm just worried people coming to this are writing off all his past work as the non experimental stuff or whatever. IFWWW is a near classic to me hence the strong language

I am with Row on that one, Burgh Island is the best thing he has ever done. 4 absolute masterpieces, no more, no less. And I love this one, and I agree this is his most mature album and probably and objectively his best, but personally I still prefer "I Forget...". Nothing will ever top "End of the Affair" for me. Ever.

dewi my man < 3

ye idk seeing his more commercial stuff being described as pandering really rubbed me the wrong way. just because it's not ambient extraordinaire doesn't mean it's not equally valid, if anything Burgh Island title track is as experimental as anything on this

I'm worried recency bias is playing a big part of this acclaim as tends to happen with Sowing-hype-train albums (Sowing, I love you I swear)

Lol Rowan, I've heard the Burgh Island EP and it's probably the second best thing he's done. This feels like a lot of the same ideas just pursued further. Pandering was probably the wrong word, maybe "playing more to his pop sensibilities"? There's definitely nothing wrong with his previous works and I think I have them all rated pretty highly.

Also in "There's Your Man" does anyone else hear a more ambient Police song? His vocals are a bit different there, lol.

The previous stuff does nothing for me, this on the other hand is weighty material that draws you in and absolutely captivates.
