yeah Brent really makes this band

the production is so bad

is that a weird thing to notice in a shinedown album? idk man they always sound so polished
|

Saw them live at a festival and the vocalist wouldn't shut the fuck up. Seriously could've fit an extra three songs in there.
Not that I particularly give a shit. Just something I noticed

>But to end it, I'd say the examples you brought up are good examples of bands that at some point brought something new and positive to their genre but then went on to create very poor content that when compared to Attention are clearly less remarkable and very forgettable.
When you're comparing bands like that to Shinedown, you have to understand the contrast. When Linkin Park screws up, its a disaster. People remember those dumpster fires because they made an impact. When Shinedown screws up, no one cares. Shinedown's albums are usually forgettable because they don't do anything. "Threat to Survival" wasn't anything special. "Attention..." is too early to tell. "Amaryllis" made a splash despite being average at best. They aren't making a big impact when they release something regardless. I'm sure you remember "One More Light." It may not be remarkable, but its memorable for many reasons. Yet, you can't find too many people talking about anything other than "Sound of Madness" in casual conversation.
>is that a weird thing to notice in a shinedown album?
That was the first thing I noticed when listening.

Hmmm...I'm still a bit troubled on this one. Better than Threat to Survival for sure, but not sold on it yet. Even with the great tracks, there are still some minor buzzing flies around them. "Beast mode" from Kill Your Conscience comes to mind, as does that lame smattering of self-applause from Special.
Oh, Sowing. As your reviews have been pretty damn great (and one of the reasons I, myself, decided to make an account), I was wondering if you actually had an opinion on Sevendust's "All I See Is War"?

Yeah so this grew off me a bit (as mainstream releases tend to do) but this is still better than TtS and Amaryllis (barely). Definitely a step, but not a leap, in the right direction.
Thanks Matt! I've never listened to Sevendust ¯_(ツ)_/¯

Sevendust was one of those filler bands who jumped into the nu/alt-metal wave of the early 2000's. They had limited success, maybe a hit or two, but generally overlooked due to bigger and better bands taking the forefront. They never did anything new or unique in their careers. They were just there at the right time. I wouldn't go out of my way to listen to them.

Did you just compare Brent Smith to Ronnie Van Zant?

Lynyrd Skynyrd is one of their influences. I wouldn't dare compare the two though.

-Sowing - Ah, different tastes, I suppose... Yeah, I'd at least say it's better than TTS...which still sticks in my craw to this day. These guys were once my favourite band, and for them to release...that, really hurt.
-Drop - While I'd say I'm a very big fan of the Dust, I can't help but agree with your point, they were always primed to be an all-time great (Angel's Son springs to mind) but yeah, they never made the jump and as such got eclipsed by other bands...incidentally such as Shinedown.

Sevendust never gave mainstream audiences enough reason to care about them. Staind, Seether, and Saliva (I'm sorry guys, but I had to bring them up) were all doing similar things. Hell, even Coal Chamber accomplished more than Sevendust.

I think the album may be the best quality business of this shinedown so far

Welp, it's been a month and I've just gone through my third listen (I try not to overplay these things). Might as well add my 'worst-to-best':
The Entrance - N/A - Your 39-sec intro, nothing else...
Evolve - 2 - Average at best, but the post-chorus is just lazy and aggravating.
Get Up - 3 - As far as ballads go it's okay but they've done much better.
Special - 3 - See above, plus that self-applause at the end is something I just have to shake my head at.
Pyro - 3 - High-octane and aggressive, a serviceable rocker.
Darkside - 3.5 - Good change of style compared to most of the others, I like the change of tempo as well.
Monsters - 4 - This one's grown on me a bit, and actually tries to capture some of the sound of their earlier albums.
Black Soul - 4 - Combines keys with modern rock, One of the better choruses the band have come up with.
Creatures - 4 - See "Monsters".
The Human Radio - 4 - Eric throws down a nice bass line here, and it's a quite good stage rocker.
Kill Your Conscience - 4 - An acquired taste, but the lyrics make this one for me plus there's some top-notch drums. I'll even forgive that shameful opening line.
Devil - 4 - A damn nice banger with a great chorus. Right up there with Cut The Cord and Sound of Madness.
Brilliant - 4 - Upbeat and triumphant, Brilliant is an assuring closer that successfully tries something new.
Attention Attention - 4.5 - I'm surprised at this, but it's a grower. Plus the rapping in the verses adds a sense of urgency to the mood of this song. Love it.
It's a slightly-above-average album that's got some highlights, albeit surrounded by a couple of noticeable issues like the vocal filters, repetitive chants ("Pyro, "Creatures", "Get Up"), uninspiring lyrics, "Beast Mode"). Sure, they're indulging in 2018 Radio cliches, but at least they're graceful about it this time. Plus there's nothing totally cringeworthy here ("It All Adds Up"...ugh). It's not enough to wash away the awful taste of Threat to Survival but it should be enough to keep people on board with Shinedown. Granted, I'm not everyone else on Sputnik but still...
The Sound Of Madness -> Us And Them -> Leave A Whisper -> Attention Attention -> Amaryllis ----> Threat To Survival

It wasn't directed at the album, just at the song he mentioned. I thought it was surprising.
