I've been slowly warming up more and more to Sowingcore. Will check.

Halfway through 'Birdless Cage' and I'm already thinking this is likely to be AOTY for me

Really liking this album, but I feel like I'm not quite able to dive into understanding the lyrics and themes in it (and their music in general). I want to dig in, I really do, but for right now it's just not "clicking" with me lyrically. Anyone want to offer their interpretations?

Varuna brings back a lot of memories but I've never really dug any of their other stuff hard. Let's see how this one goes!

I've read a couple interviews where they say "Northern Orthodox" was based on a dream, and I know a lot of their stuff is a blend of ethereal elements and philosophical/literary elements. In terms of identifying a specific "theme" here I'm not quite sure yet. Lots a references to the mind and soul but I'm still piecing together the lyrics.

First listen and I was kinda underwhelmed. It's good but the production was kinda weird & none of the songs really blew me away. Varuna was a slight grower tho so maybe this will be.

I actually think this is a major improvement over Varuna. The production and technical precision is better, and the songs are catchier, too.

idk man, for me varuna had this unexplainable overarching haunting atmosphere whenever I listened to it - songs like the t/t, oarsman, touz le tous & the attic always blow me away even now.
even then it's kinda just a high 3.5.

Finally got to listen to this all the way through this morning. Instant 4+. Feels like it'll continue to grow. Need some more listens to give it a fair take.

Crazy that Varuna was released 8 years ago wth

Yeah I know what you mean about the atmosphere, and Varuna's is more cohesive. This is more straightforward rock, but what it lacks (compared to Varuna) in atmosphere it more than makes up for in breakdowns (Mitama), guitar solos (Yume), and overall catchiness/production (the whole thing). Also, in my humble opinion, Bask is the best song they've ever created. Of course, everyone is entitled to their own rankings, preferences, etc! I'm just glad there is interest sparked over their music.

Yeah I'd always hoped this band would get another strong album for discussion away from the Daisy demo's hype which existed.

Ditto. I think The Cartographer started to show deviation with its pop-infused hooks, and Varuna's creepy folk thing helped separate them as well. No Matter How Narrow was a big departure from the daisy demos but unfortunately it didn't hold up very well over time and lacked the passion of previous outings. For me, this is the first time everything has been put together along with a totally unique identity (sure, Mason will always sound a lot like Jesse, but outside of that.) It's a statement album that also sees them stepping out of the demo shadows and into their own.

Boy does this singer sound like Jesse Lacey. This is very good on first listen. First Lo Moon and now you got me on this? Maybe 2018 is the year my metal/hip-hop binge finally screeches to a halt.

bask is honestly one of my least favs on here
all about the canyon, yume and colored out for me but for the most part this is consistently pretty great, where i think varuna is a little hit and miss in places
