Thank you my dude, honestly I enjoy a lot of the music that Sputnik enjoys as well, and I wouldn't have found wonderful bands / composers like Converge, Strapping Young Lad, Olafur Arnalds, Sigur Ros, Godspeed You! Black Emperor, etc if I didn't join here, just part of my taste is a little unconventional. This site definitely expanded my musical palette over my eight years of posting / listening / writing (Jane Doe especially, since that helped me get over my ex-fiance, I jammed that just as much as BVB for a good six months), but Black Veil Brides just clicked with me the first time I heard them in 2009, and that never faded. I have physical copies of every album, and I'm passing them onto my own kids when I eventually become a father.

"and I'm passing them onto my own kids when I eventually become a father."

I don't know whether that's endearing or extremely cringy. Probably both.

My dad never passed music down to me bar the odd song here and there (most of them were just popular bands at the time that his younger employees would burn onto discs for him), and not having that experience kinda stunk since a father and son are supposed to do that, you know? So I want to give my kids what I didn't have. My mom was the one who passed down a lot of music she enjoyed over to me (like Aerosmith, Boston, The Eagles, etc), I loved that, but I wish my dad would have been more open with me about that as well, music is important as hell to me and to be able to share it with both parents would have been wonderful.

I don't see why a parent needs to do that. For example I would never do that because I think they should develop their own tastes in art without my influence. It turned out for the better for yourself but with a lot of children it can end up going the opposite direction.

Pretty much. Feel free to introduce your kids to music, but don't encringe on their rights if they aren't open to it.

@Storm: Dude, I love my mom. I love my dad too, but holy shit my mom rules.

@swipe: Thank you my dude! Of course it's going to be my kid's choice whether or not they want the CDs, I just want to pass on what I love to my children.

@Calc: I think it's important for a child and parent to share music together, at least that's what my mom and I did. We would jam whole albums together, I'd play her an Avenged Sevenfold album, she'd play me an Aerosmith album just as an example. It opened my eyes to new, classic music as a child / teenager and allowed me to enjoy as many genres as I do today because of that early exposure.

@Jac: Dammit man, lmao.

I wouldn't say it's essential but if you have it I can imagine it being nice. My relationship with my parents on that front is...rocky let's say. Great to hear you that bond with them though.

@Calc: It really was nice, we used to travel a lot for my sister's ice skating and so we had hours and hours in the car to just dedicate to listening to music. Dear lord my mom hated harsh vocals though, only band with screams she ever got into was Breaking Benjamin and that's because there was a very small amount of them. (Diary of Jane is one of her favorite songs, we usually jam Breaking Benjamin whenever we hang out). If I may ask, why did your parents not pass that onto you? Was it just a difference of opinion, or other shit.

I don't know man. Never bothered with this kind of groups, plus I'm kinda lazy when it comes to new music lol.

@Ripping: Check "Dead Man Walking" off of this album to see if you dig it! Here's the link to bypass the laziness - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=af2sDmPJxnk

To be fair Diary of Jane is a great song so at least she likes that, some people will never harsh vocals and that's fine. My parents tried, pretty hard but I'm just not having any of it. First experience was going to a festival with them when I was 15 for a weekend where I had nothing to do and nowhere to go. I also had no say in anything to do so I hated it. I never showed any of my music because I was a stubborn asshole when I was younger, and they just got further and further into their scene whilst I just did not care. As I grew less opinionated over time I eventually reached a dialogue with them and we've concluded that what they want from music is so diametrically opposed to how I enjoy it, compatibility just isn't there. They most likely think I hate their stuff, but I don't. Can't be helped though.

@Calc: That makes sense, and don't get me wrong I was stubborn on a lot of shit around that age as well. I don't think I ever went to any music festivals with my parents, I saw the Eagles with them once, along with Josh Groban. Although when I move to Colorado I'm probably going to go see a lot more music with my mom once my job schedule settles. Yeah I get that on the compatibility issue, despite being able to enjoy a lot with my mom, she can't stand about 95% of the bands I listened to. I showed her Jane Doe one time and she lasted about 40 seconds into the first track before she started getting a migraine.
