I like it better than White Lighter. Totally different feel, much darker, more raw (not as many strings/horns, and a lot of just-guitar-and-morton-moments), but the song writing is more dynamic and progressive, more ambiance. Much more of a post-rock direction than upbeat indie folk like the last. The concept and lyrics are amazing.

This.
They also (appear to have) lost their horn section which was a large part of their sound in the past, and probably their most outwardly appealing aspect. I think they've done a hell of a job compensating for it, but I think it's also hurt them when it's come to the reception of their new album amongst their existing fanbase.

Did they lose the section? I thought Morton said he specifically he kept the horns out because he wanted to keep the album darker.

That's what I originally thought. It's not entirely clear, but the fact they're not touring with any horns at all suggests otherwise to me - as there are still small horn parts on this album and significant sections in the rest of their discography.
Edit: Did a quick Google search. The interview Morton did with Uproxx states it like this.
"Typhoon has ballooned to as many as 12 members on previous records, though the band recently slimmed down to a relatively svelte seven-person lineup when Morton’s latest songs no longer required the use of a horn section."
So, you might be right, or they may just be trying to sell a smaller lineup to their fanbase. Hard to tell.

Hmm, I didn't realize that. I thought they were still about a dozen strong. It makes sense though.

isn't this just mumford and sons for music nerds?

even sowing thought this was forgettable indie rock, that should give anyone pause.

Sowing dug it. Check my shoutbox for proof

his soundoff: "I don't really get this. It's a well put-together indie-rock album for sure, but...it's forgettable. (Gasp)"

Oh, that's new. He had it at a 3.5 for a while. I figured he bump it before dropping it. But also remember he threw a 3.8 at When We Land. He's on a quest against hype this year

that confounds me, this seems like a peak Sowing album

This has little to do with the Mumford bitches lol Lucid wtf.
And Sowing not digging this probably means that this is actually good ;)

I don't think it sounds like Mumford but I think people know what they mean when they say it. Sometimes the production dips into that mainstream radio rock garbage.

This band used to have 12 members? I thought they seemed incredibly bloated at 7. That second drummer basically just hit the electronic pad when needed over the course of that Empiricist video.
That said I do dig Rorschach and Ariadne quite a bit here.

I just played that "life is strange" game when stumbling over this and, wtf, a band called Typhoon from Oregon playing this kind of tastefully restarined dark indie rock/indie folk is so in line with that game! amazing coincidence!
ah btw: really good album...

"this seems like a peak Sowing album"
FR though, no idea how he can gush over bland stuff like Manchester Orchestra and still call this "forgettable". That being said though, his review of ABMttS is probably one of the best things he's written.
BTW love ur profile pic anatelier

ya really, if Sowing likes something I'm concerned...
mumford and sons comparison is pretty lazy and contrived

is this gonna be some Sowing-core, Manchester Orchestra/Gang of Youths dark indie folk shit that's hella atmospheric and over dramatic?
