i wish this album was a little less formulaic when it comes to the vocals. with each song i was preparing myself 3/4 of the way through for her to start belting out notes one octave above, it became pretty predictable. that said, her voice is phenomenal and the lyrics on this floored me a good 75% of the time. really look forward to her next album after some more maturing.

I've stopped noticing this. I've also yet to decide whether that's good or bad.

I'm cool with it mostly, her belting is fucking awesome and she subverts it just enough (either holding off the belting from the song entirely or belting earlier in the song) for it to be fresh when she does it
There's some songs on here that feel like don't capitalize on her voice very well though, like sour breath's layering and effects kinda getting in the way of her belting at the end
And claws in your back covers the high note in a little too much reverb imo
Plus I'm not a huge fan of the shoegazey ending of the title track
But still this album's awesome. Sour Breath kinda reminds me of Two by The Antlers now that I think about it in the way the lyrics are structured and the way they keep they make the song constantly getting bigger
Shadowboxing, Appointments and Happy to Be Here are all phenomenal songs

I think that's a stretch, Sour Breath is one of my least faves here. I dunno, I just found this a bit one-paced and lyrically repetitive. Whereas the debut really grabbed me and is still in my rotation this didn't click

I love Sour Breath. I think the vocal melody's great and it's the album's shortest song so it doesn't overstay its welcome IMO.

The longer I live with this album the closer it gets to a five.

Had a weird dream last night, Julien was chilling with me and a few of mates, had a nice chat, then we all died in a car crash. :/
Still a wonderful album

"then we all died in a car crash. :/" Oh my... Hope you were wearing seatbelts. What a strange/interesting dream, though, have any idea what caused it?

I have no idea tbh. Maybe I listened to Blacktop and Hurt Less too much recently, who knows

after a couple of weeks with this, i still really like it, but it's missing something for me that "sprained ankle" had. i want to love it, but i just can't for some reason. i had the same thing with angel olsen and bon iver's albums from last year. i really liked them, but i just didn't establish that connection with them to make me love them. it's weird.

yeah I've had a lot of albums this year hit that "I really like it but I don't love it" mark
I haven't heard her past stuff but I do love this one
