"ya all of their choruses are basically pop punk now which is disappointing." -Insurrection
That's an interesting theory, but pop-punk has always been a part of Rise Against. They took influence from the genre in their earlier single "Like The Angel" and no one cared. I always saw that shift coming, so I never was disappointed when they incorporated pop-punk into their choruses.

Speaking of "Fargo," I thought the staff's work on "Legion" was great!

i agree and that is part of what i loved about them is their blend of hardcore and pop punkish choruses. but they used to mix things up with songs like dead ringer or state of the union or bricks that were straight punk and kept things interesting
i guess their pop punk side is just more predictable now and everything kinda blends together. i wouldnt say any of their stuff is terrible though

Idk I just really like the melodies (especially vocally) that these guys come up with. Their songs just have a flow to them that I really enjoy.

that's actually the exact opposite of what this band started with though which is why it's so frustrating to watch (or hear) how they're growing.

A wise man once said, "You will not be punished for your anger, you will be punished by your anger." Rise Against was angry in "Appeal to Reason," but they did not display it in the same way as "The Sufferer and the Witness." Rise Against has had a strange way on making the listener feel what they are feeling. "People Live Here" is one of Rise Against's angriest songs, but there is nothing aggressive about it aesthetically. The listener has to delve into the song, *understand* the song, and then they feel the emotion. "Appeal to Reason" had angry songs, but not in the way in which the fans were used to. Rise Against included a mixed bag of songs that were angry and optimistic. The album had energy, emotion, and was interesting.
"Wolves" felt like it *had* to happen rather than it *needed* to happen. That's what separates "Wolves" from the rest. "Siren Song of the Counterculture" needed to happen. "The Sufferer and the Witness" needed to happen. "Wolves" *wanted* to happen. The songs had anger, but they didn't feel that way. The anger felt bottled, and unfortunately, Rise Against held back at the worst time possible. That is why "Wolves" was not their best album. Tim McIlrath did not have to scream to make a point, nor did the guitars have to pound into your skull, but they did have to take a stand to display the emotions they felt. While the album was a step in the right direction, it felt like Rise Against could have done a lot better.

No matter how you look at it, the concept of the album is the reason why the songs, in your opinion, turned out bad. The concept is the foundation in which everything is built upon. If you know the base is uneven, what happens to everything else? The concept was to relay an aggressive message in a modern tone. The hint being modern - you should consider the fact modern post-hardcore and alternative has changed quite a bit since 2004.
