I love this album... Old AFI's pretty bad, honestly. Black Sails forward is all you need. And I know this is very unorthodox, but I think their last two albums are their best.

As a huge AFI fan, I still think this is one of the worst albums I've ever heard. It's unfortunate, but true.

Yeah, I like to think that the new album will be a return to form, but I'm keeping my expectations low.

AFI's worst but it's still really good.

AFI's worst my arse! I'd love to see what you think is their best.

To the h8rs out there, I sincerely ask just what you were expecting of this album.

Something that didn't suck, like all their other albums.

You know what I mean. I'd really appreciate it if you could present me something with a bit more depth to it than "it sucks". I'm honestly interested.

Yes, I agree, let's not worry what Davey Havok looks like.

It's bland, repetitive, conforms to a million musical stereotypes that I detest, it feels very artificial as opposed to something like Black Sails, there isn't any of that passionate punk left in them, the songs themselves are all very, very forgettable, and most importantly, and make sure you take good note of this, compared to their gazillion other albums, this is a very poor effort. Perhaps if this was their only album it could be like a 2 or maybe even a 2.5 or whatever, but the fact that I know they can do so much better makes it even worse. Oh and also, you like it, so I automatically reject.

Although I do like this album a lot, when I listen to B-sides from Sing the Sorrow, like Synaesthesia (one of their best IMO) I wonder how great this could have been if they had continued on from there.
That said, hopefully that's where they'll pick up on their new one, which I will be picking up the day of its release, no matter what. This Message Edited On 12.12.08

Okay, let's dissect this little rant.

conforms to a million musical stereotypes that I detest

Such as...?

it feels very artificial as opposed to something like Black Sails, there isn't any of that passionate punk left in them

I don't know how to tell you this, but they're not a punk band anymore. They've grown up and moved on; they're interested in different things now. Hell, YOU'RE a different person to the one you were in the nineties, right?

Just because they can afford better production and are using things like synths and drum machines, doesn't make it "artificial".

the songs themselves are all very, very forgettable

Considering a lot of these songs are excellent pop songs with solid hooks, I find this one personally very hard to believe.

compared to their gazillion other albums, this is a very poor effort.

That's your opinion, and I respect that. But I think just as much effort and as much focus has gone into this than anything they've done with Puget on board.

Oh and also, you like it, so I automatically reject.

Damn, dude, I know that's supposed to be a real bitchy little statement but if that's really your policy then get ready to throw away half your music collection.

I wasn't referring to the production, I was referring to the fact it didn't sound natural whatsoever.

No actually, they're bad pop songs with uninteresting hooks.

Basically, you're just contesting me on completely subjective points, so I'd quit while you're ahead.

Oh yeah I'll start with throwing out As the Roots Undo!

I really don't like this band and it's not for the thought out reason Rasputin has... it's simply because the vocalist sounds like an angry chipmunk. If Alvin, Simon, and Theodore started a punk band I imagine it would sound like this.

Sure, it's not a sound a lot of people warmed to initially, but I definitely feel this is a record AFI wanted to do for a long time. Ultimately, it was an experiment; and it paid off. What they do next is anyone's guess, I think.

Basically, you're just contesting me on completely subjective points, so I'd quit while you're ahead.

DUH! Can you imagine what a NON-subjective discussion about music would be like?

"This band isn't called AFI!"

"Yes, it is"

"Right you are. My mistake!"

Everyone's got their own opinions. I'm just discussing mine with you, and vice versa.

You mention on various occasions "could have been taken from a pop punk album". Well, isn't this a pop punk album. Im not saying its a bad thing, as I love this album, but AFI have definitely changed their style.

I like the new influences. I personally would have them as they are now as they seem to be enjoying deserved success. One of the few bands that I don't mind becoming too successful. Anyways seeya guys. Great review BTW. Pretty much sums up the album. Much better than my attempt. Cheerio, i'm off to do a poo. LOL

I'm a bit addicted to this record right now.. I love it. I really feel like the concept of the album was pulled off well. A lot of bands decide that their entire CD has one singular focus, but it's so rare that they deliver (The Black Parade, for instance). This is just great.

Yeah. My Chemical Romance really annoy me. I dont know why. I think its a metalhead's instinct to hate this kinda music, but DAMN I like this stuff. I dont even mind Fall Out Boy, or Paramore.

Its music that even your parents could listen to and enjoy, rather than call mindless noise and switch off. My mum has god hours of pleasure from this album, and now thinks shes come sorta cool parents cos she likes AFI....if only she knew too.

Ha ha. My mom generally hates anything I like. However, I have a horrible habit of stealing her CDs, like Fleetwood Mac, The Stranglers...cos its good stuff. The music isnt like that anymore.

I seem to get a lot of abuse on here from big greasy metal fans for liking Trivium. Its pretty gay. I mean I know they copy Metallica and blah blah blah but if its good ill listen to it. Like this stuff.

Jesus. Some people need to get a life (not you guys, the smelly pretentious metalheads).
