So, everyone, what rappers do you think teens 13-16 listen to?
|
| |
Nas.

I haven't had the chance to scroll through middle school kids' iPods, but I'm assuming Drake, ASAP Mob, Wiz, Yachty, Uzi, Tory Lanez, Lil Wayne, Future, J. Cole, maybe Eminem. mix of pop rap and some of the newer trap/R&B ish

I can see that. I know when I was in high school (2009-2013), the kids my age weren't really in to Cole. It was Lil Wayne, Drake, Rick Ross, 2 Chainz, Future, and Gucci Mane. They weren't into a lot of conscious stuff.

and yeah that's what I'm saying openmind, I was in high school around the same time. I don't think J. Cole is some pinnacle of conscious rap though, especially 4-5 years ago. He still got spun by a fair amount of people who liked Drake and Big Sean.
@GhostofSarcastic he's listed as a conscious hip-hop artist on RYM, so it's not a totally invalid statement which I assume is what you're snidely implying

Nah he was more criticizing the term itself.

if that's the case. I guess you could argue it's a dumb term that subjectively decides which artists are "lyrical" and which aren't (or are less so)
fair enough Sach, when I was in highschool a lot of the rap fans (including me when I just started getting into it) still listened to some trap rap like Future and similar shit though

Ah, okay, tellah. I'm not to familiar with his older stuff other than the Warm Up. I see what you're saying though. From my sources, J. Cole is known as a conscious rapper, even if it's only a little.

The best J. Cole song was like Work Out or some shit but then he had to get Let Nas Down or some shit

I think it was more common around 5 years ago for 14-16 year olds to be listening to J. Cole than it is now. I feel like it's subject to change with the new wave that's coming in.
