filler doesn't mean bad, just good if unremarkable. musically this plays it about as blandly and safely as it's possible to do, except (surprise surprise) on the title track, which actually evokes something outside of the lyrics

maybe not (those are my highlights as well), but i think it's pretty consistently good
title track is unbeatable though

I know what filler means.

i wasn't trying to be patronising - a lot of people have a different definition and see it as more negative

I know, just saying I stand by my comment regardless of that or anyone else's definition of filler.

The title track is Jesus

something like that

fair enough - i suppose it feeds into a wider issue i have with cohen's catalogue where i wish he cared as much about his instrumentals as he did about his lyrics. the only LP in the cohen canon that is successful outside of the stripped-down folk idiom is new skin for the old ceremony imo

Cohen was always a poet/writer first, musician second.

true. it's not like he's not capable of great, interesting music as well though when he wants to, which frustrates me

But with lyrics as consistently excellent as these can anything rly be said to be filler???

by cohen's standards? yes

Okay sure but Cohen released two of the greatest albums of all time so almost anything could be said to be filler if you hold it up to those standards. Taken on its own terms as an album this is pretty consistent

it's certainly consistent (no 'jazz police' here) - maybe it's just that to me there's such a bit drop off between my favorites and the rest of the album that i find it hard to listen past track 2

My only problem with this album is that he puts some of the "samey" tracks together in the first half, and the rest is weirder. I wish he spread those ballads out more

yeah i kind of agree with that. the second half is killer

The lyrics printed on the insert of the vinyl release (which came out after his death) have the line "I'm ready, my lord" changed to "I'm with you, my lord".
