Liking this so far. I've always been a fan of the tone of Justin's voice.

This is definitely not on the same level as the first two albums and I'm not just saying that because of the new direction. It's like, five years and this is the best they can do? I don't know, It looks look I'm in the minority though. It feels like I heard a different album than everyone else. It's just very OK.

I feel like everyone (including Vernon) wants me to love or hate this but I'm mostly massively indifferent to it

Both the extended version of 22 Over Soon and 10 Death Breast leave me more satisfied than the album versions, I don't quite understand... Perhaps there's a point to leaving them off that'll make sense when I dive into it a bit more, but it's still not as good, so it makes little to no sense to me at the moment.

You know what, this album's really similar to For Emma. Not sonically... just, vibe-wise, thematically if you will. Very different to the self-titled, both this and For Emma are about losing something (love in For Emma, something yet unclear to me on this one, but it's definitely there), and then about uncertainty about the future (not necessarily in a negative way, but not optimistic either)

I think the part you're talking about was done post album completion, strictly for the purpose of that youtube lyric video single, not ever intended to be on the actual record.

that's not how songwriting works, they write songs that tend to be longer and then cut them down. obviously Justin had a vision for this album where it was only 34 minutes for whatever reason so he cut each song down really brutally (compare them to the Eaux Claire lives you'll see what I mean), but no-one writes and records extra material for a lyric video lmao

Rowan, perhaps you misunderstood me. I think the decision that the song is going to be the way it is on the album (the shorter/cut version), was done a while ago, and whatever the original length of this track was, was never intended to appear that way on the album. The version you heard in the lyric video/live performance, was made (ok,so.. dug up from the earlier versions of recording) simply to be presented as a single.
But I see your earlier point now, you meant that now that you've heard the extended/alternative version of the song, you wish that he's never made the decision to abridge it for the purposes of the album? Alright, I politely disagree.)))

I think he was. He's writing about his wife homemaking lyric videos now, so he can't be serious.

I don't want to speak for him, but I think he's still just messing around about the weird aesthetics, and I don't think he's addressing the same point as you and climactic, which is one I agree with, though I'd argue it harkens moreso back to Self Record.
