"Chevelle is an alternative metal band from Grayslake, IL, that specializes in crafting 3.8 albums..."

Lol... that description always gets me.. So should I check these guys out, or what? I guess i'm still not seeing the allure.

This thread is WOW. I've never seen such a sourpuss with such defensive attitude on this site. It was quite funny and sad.

This album is solid. The riffs seem a bit repetitive because they're fairly simple. One thing that bugs me is when Pete just repeats lines over and over and mostly towards the end of the songs. Not a lot of creativity there. Punchline is pretty cool. That first verse in Wicked Young is exceptional.

I don't know if this will have the lasting appeal that some of their other classics have.

Based on past pages, this is one of the most ignorant, thick-headed newer reviewers I've seen on this site.

I am a part time reviewer on another web site and by no means a professional. I always ask the "real" writers there for help/edit after writing. I am just dumbfounded why this guy doesn't want help.

Wow Kbridges if you can't handle/don't want to hear constructive criticism then kindly get the fuck off this site. This is one of the worst reviews I've read in a while not to mention how ridiculous it is to call an album a Classic on the day it comes out.

This thread went south really fast. Everyone is jumping the bandwagon in criticizing kbridge's review, mostly because he didn't have a negative thing to say about the new album. I wouldn't say it's fan boyish. He tried to explain why is was great, but perhaps he didn't execute that very well, considering the consensus here. Even if you didn't agree with his review, that's why you can rate the album to your liking. Other reviewers can review this album. Kbridges word isn't the end all be all. Chill the fuck out people.

The first few comments were: oh a five; so fanboyish; etc. there were a handful of legit criticisms, but they were drowned out by useless criticism. And when you've got useless criticism (i.e. Criticism that just says your this and offers no alternative) your patience gets worn thin. So you think he's a fanboy according to this ONE review. Fine. Cool. Is it so hard for most (NOT ALL) to offer concrete examples on why this wasn't chevelle's best album to change the reviewer's perspective? He's allowed to defend his writing, and I bet he would have been more open minded had not the first commenters been annoyingly vague.

Here's my opinion kbridge: I don't have a problem with you thinking that this is there best album. I love this album. This is their heaviest, I would say, but not the best. Why? I'll be happy and courteous to tell you. Lol. Vena Sera, IMO, had more lyrical content. More metaphors, and experimental writing. Which is why it's my favorite. No crime in that. =] this album, as heavy as it is, sacrificed it's lyrical strength for heavier sounding riffs and vocal growls, or whatnot. I would have rated the album 4.0-ish. Vena Sera would have been rated 5.0 is my extremely happiest days.

Since, I've been a Chevelle fan for more than 12 years, I'm pretty biased. So.. I acknowledge that will most probably influence my opinion.

I'm sorry you got a lot of heat for your review. A friendly advice? Only respond to criticism you think is constructive. Don't fuel the fire because you think you can change the minds of commenters who are satisfied with calling you a fanboy in just one or two sentences. Makes you look more respectful and mature.

I think its the fact that it reads more like an advertisement than an honest review and every time he attempts to actually deconstruct the album turns into him blowing smoke up its ass. I understand he absolutely loves the album , but so do all the other reviewers who rate albums 5 yet they justify their rating in a much more sort of analytical and less hyperbolic way as good reviews should.

i didnt think it was so hard to figure out the complaints were it was a low quality review that didn't justify a perfect score for an album that was only hours old. everything beyond that was the wrtier's own stubborness.

because the other chevelle review, sitting at a 4.5, has zero comments calling it out... because its significantly better in writing.

Totally get that. There are better ways to go about it. It did sound like an advertisement, but I wanted to give him the benefit of the doubt.

If by chance, you were to write something of low quality, and someone gives it criticism with no substance, you wouldn't take it seriously. The reviewer was polite in the beginning and then it just went south because he kept asking for concrete reviews, but the most he would get was "you're just a fanboy." Those that did give him proper criticism weren't taken seriously because of the way the thread was going. I read the other review for the album, and it was pretty reasonable. Commenters there were fine because it was reasonable. Had the reviewer given it a 5.0 rating, I'm sure they jump down his/her throat. We're passionate about the music we listen to. Maybe we can conduct ourselves accordingly?

If the review sucks, then it sucks. Just saying it sucks isn't enough. We've different tastes and perspectives; I'm sure we can articulate them better because the whole thread seemed (not that it is, just appeared) to have overly sensitive 13 year olds fighting over whose opinion mattered more. This thread doesn't make anyone look good.

I'm sure we all agree this was not chevelle's best album, but it's a solid one.

By the way, I miss the reviews where they critique each song in its own paragraph. Is that still being done anywhere else?

track by tracks are better suited for lists nowadays tbh

like "____ album ranked," and then some descriptions for each

Yeah I think reviews read a lot better when they are succinct and specific tracks are only mentioned when they help demonstrate the point being made. At the end of the day they're supposed to be a review of the album not a recap of it.

You're right. Reviews shouldn't be written as recaps. There is a reason why they disappeared. Lol

I don't think people took issue with the review so much as the reviewer. People weren't even really attacking him yet he immediately got defensive and started lashing out at anyone who offered criticism. I have no real issue with the review itself; it was a tad biased, but that's to be expected with an extreme review at either end of the spectrum (1 or 5).
