I find it really boring, it's only 33minutes? But it feels much longer. I don't like technical music for the sake of being technical.
I haven't fallen in love with a gorguts album since Obscura, it when down hill after that.

fwth is their best album

It's interesting you should say that Mystle because if any of their albums could be described as "technical for the sake of being technical", it's Obscura. Granted, it still rules, but with all those intentionally jarring riffs and random tapping solos it fits the description perfectly.

Every song on obscura is memorable, each riff has a purpose despite it being incredibly technical, the random taps are one of the best things about the album.

I completely agree with Jac - Obscura is their worst output for exactly that reason. This and Coloured Sands are technical, but not needlessly so. They're just more conventionally proggy. FWTH is their best.
|
| |
@Mystle - Still doesn't excuse your dumb, untrue criticism of their other work lol
|
| |
FWTH is their most cohesive for sure, it's my fav too.
|
| |
I think it's pretty harsh to describe Obscura as their worst output, but that being said, I disagree with FWtH being considered their best. I've spun that album many times and have found it a bit underwhelming, but I still really enjoy it. Maybe it'll grow on me more.

Jac, technical for the sake of being technical implies that the technicality of the composition was unnecessary to convey the same ideas. I'm sure you understand that.
I don't think you can really level that criticism at Obscura, and Mystle's response is a fair way of looking at that album, in my opinion.

Can't really get into Obscura, but it has some of the most intense moments in death metal (Nostalgia.). Considered Dead is easily their worst though.

@jac
You seem mad
Let's be real here obscura and Erosion of Sanity is best guts
|
| |
Whoa there, Considered is a fantastic album that can't really be compared to their later work on a like-for-like basis given the significant stylistic changes that the band underwent from Obscura onward.

Considered Dead is a fine album for what it is, but it still is their worst.
|
| |
I'm honestly confused as to why so many people here think FWTH is the best.
|
| |
Erosion is my personal fav 'guts yes but Obscura is still unquestionably their showiest album and tbh it's no more memorable than any of their later work and for sure not more memorable than From Wisdom.
"technical for the sake of being technical implies that the technicality of the composition was unnecessary to convey the same ideas"
I can get behind this but I don't think it's unreasonable to suggest that one of the objectives behind Obscura was to be as zany as possible.
|
| |
That's fair, Jac. Zany doesn't exactly mean technical in my mind, but I see where you're coming from. I would argue that Obscura is indeed more memorable, but that's definitely a matter of opinion that we can agree to disagree on.

I love everything else by this band but Obscura is borderline nonsensical when it comes to composition. I laugh out loud whenever I hear the completely out of place and ineffective tapping lead come in on the title track, and that's only a minute and a half into the album. This EP is harmonically and compositionally much more interesting.
FWTH is the best Gorguts since they figured out how to scale back the silliness of Obscura and distill out its most interesting harmonic ideas into a more familiar and effective style of DM.
I agree that Erosion rules though. Maybe 2nd or 3rd best.

| |
@Rik Frankly, at this point, I would argue that this is their worst output. But it's not an LP and it's way too early for me to confidently say that, so there's caveats.

Lol Jac that's dubious and you know it.
