AF were already much more popular and well-established at that point than Sturgill is now though, so it's not all that comparable.

Yeah but when AF won, indie music was becoming more popular and once the band became practically a household name with their new mainstream recognition, the media has been throwing around "indie" as some sort of catch all genre tag for alternative.
Country lately has been becoming extremely mainstream what with Blake Shelton giving the genre an immense boost in popularity due to The Voice. Hell if you look at the major Grammy categories in the past few years, country is slowly establishing itself as something just as big as pop.
Idk I'm rambling here but I'm just trying to keep unrealistically high hopes this dude will snatch AOTY

@TVC Thing is the "country" that has been popular of late is pretty much all of the bro-country and pop country ilk.
We saw something somewhat similar last year with Chris Stapleton's Traveler, another excellent, authentic country album that got nominated for AOTY and lost. All this tells us is that the public is less ready for real country than they are for indie. Though Sturgill has more indie cred than Stapleton and this is not just straight-up country so maybe that'll help him a bit.

Country lately has been becoming extremely mainstream what with Blake Shelton giving the genre an immense boost in popularity due to The Voice. dude country is actually HUGE, and i mean HUGE (in the US). almost up there with pop/hip-hop/edm actually, but no one here is really in tune with it. think about it, the entirety of the American South, and all the inner states (midwest, rocky states, southwest, northern middle-west states) all listen to tons of country. country only started to falter a bit when bro-country was emerging, but it's still huge and probably will never not be.
