Also hotline miami is best game ever, agreed. Hotline miami 2 is garbage, I wouldn't waste your money on it.

Hotline Miami 2 has everything better than the first one, except the fucking gameplay, the most central part of the game.
I still do like it quite a bit, there's a lot of effort and ideas put into the game and my god that soundtrack, enough of the /v/ bs

It's funny that you think I'm just parroting whatever /v/ is saying, assuming I even go there, when In reality I think it's a pointless sequel that waters down every aspect that made the first game one of the best indie games out there to unbearable levels. Even the soundtrack kinda bothers me, not because it's bad, but there's so many tracks that outside of the Carpenter Brut and a few Random tracks they start to become forgettable. It was just a massive waste of 15 dollars.

The final level was one of my favorite levels in any game though, visual overload and 4th wall mechanic breaking gameplay and boss battles all in one? Why didn't the entire game push for that direction?

you're not a /v/ parrot, it's just it's the kind of place from where I see the most unjustified backlash for that game (or any game for that matter) and in a certain dishonest manner too, wich tends to tire me and thus makes me shoot randomly "/v/ bs", targeting you personally was not my intention but sorry if it did come out that way out of frustration.

Anyway enough apologizing, agreed with last level, but fourth wall breaking mechanic was present throughout the whole story of HTM2 (much much more so than in 1 where the violence wasn't as viral an occupation for everyone), it's absurd parts just underline how much the MC and characters are willing to accept just for justifying the pleasure of violence. I really believe that HTM2 isn't a pointless sequel, as they tried to expand the universe and story in a cool and interesting way that unfortunatly wasn't as well integrated in the gameplay (this one being guilty of limiting the freedom and imagination of the player in his way to deal with the levels drasticly).

As for the soundtrack it's opinions and stuff but leagues better than HTM1 imo (gonna be biased forever though since I just came back from a Carpenter Brut/Perturbator gig, fab btw if anyone gets a chance to see'em)

" it's just it's the kind of place from where I see the most unjustified backlash for that game (or any game for that matter) and in a certain dishonest manner too"

To be fair, this is 4chan and they hate just about everything on earth.

My issue with HM2 outside of shitty mechanics and level design is that the overall grand scheme of the story just seems to undermine the original's genius approach to commentary on video game violence by tying it into some shitty non-linear Kubrick story where characters I couldnt care about die less than 2 levels into their story (the mobster, actor, and Jake) and the whole Russians nuking America thing was too out of leftfield for me to feel like there was any actual purpose to it other than a cool ending.

The first game was clever in the sense that you, the character, comply with the idea of killing a bunch of faceless nobodies while the game quite literally points out how bad that concept and the story itself is with the three characters projecting three different view points. It further drives that idea home with each level ending in harsh, ambient silence and having you stroll back to your vehicle through all the blood and gore. A stark contrast from the heavy color, violence, and pounding club music before. I also really loved how in the Police Station level, you find yourself given the option of killing or sparing Ritcher... yet the game doesnt clue you in on the fact the murder is optional. You just find yourself murdering him just like everyone else... to me it seemed like a cool indication that you yourself have been mindlessly programmed to murder just like the game's protagonist. It seemed like to me, a very smart indie game that highlighted the futileness of hyper-violence in media without it being preachy and still having a super fun game.

The second game however, with that shitty story, has every single aspect of commentary beat over the head so hard. For some reason Ritcher is now some dream hopping ghost who does nothing but drop exposition and explanation to every point of the game because the devs feel like we are too stupid to figure it out on our own. It even goes as far as having character straight up walk into an army tent in a panther mask and explain to the player how "WAR IS USELESS WE ARE JUST ANIMALS KILLING ANIMALS" and it was so fucking horrible. The entire game feels pointless to me because the bad level design and even dumber AI just seem to become clear indications that no real care was put into the game. Especially with a story that tries to do the whole "commentary" thing again and then fucks it up by ending entire storylines early, going 20 levels longer than needed, and beating over every little idea on the head.

The last few levels, where the detective is dragged onto a "movie set" and the final level with the drug trip were both very engaging and interesting ideas that didnt even show up until the end of the game where every single one of Ritcher's levels left you wanting to kill yourself because they were complete bullshit. I think if they had rolled with just presenting a game that fucks around with you in a grander way than the first game did with the "none of this is real" mindfuck than it wouldve been a far better game. But it didnt and that is why I hate it. It actually feels like im playing some shitty self congratulatory pretentious piece of shit that happens to have a pretty good soundtrack. I dont know if I share these sentiments with /v/ because I dont go there ever, but this has been the one thing that has made Hotline Miami 2 one of the worst games ive ever played.

also super long comments and you prolly wont read them, but fuck this game pisses me off in so many different ways. and I could probably go on even longer if I started talking about the play style of individual characters.
