What I find funny is that this album has over a thousand ratings on here as of Dec-2008, whereas other "best" albums of 1996 had less than 300 or 400. I think this is an indication that Anema has aged with time, that is was revolutionary and visionary when it was released, and that tool is one of the greatest bands to ever release a record, ever.

Third Eye is the best track by far on here BTW...and that is not in discrimination of the other tracks. They truly did save the best for last. This Message Edited On 12.26.08

Not much more that can be said about this album. Perfect in every way, a milestone of modern rock. Dark atmosphere, intelligent lyrics, very innovative and interesting in every way. The ending track is a psychodelic masterpiece. Every song is so complex in every way.

Perfect production by David Botrill. After this album, other big bands started seeking David Botrill to produce their albums. Mudvayne did it of The End of All Things to Come, and Godsmack did it for ... Faceless, was it? Although David Botrill has always done excellent jobs, no other album sounds quite as powerful and complex as Aenima did.

Surely my favorite TOOL album, sometimes I think this is the album that taught me how to listen to music. Anything before was simply a step below.

By the way, Die Eier von Satan is a recipe, in german, for little eyeball shaped cakes with hashish in them. Aenima is filled with little mysteries which make it even more interesting to dig into. The lyrics to 46 & 2 have always seemed to have some references to evolution and genetics (human beings having 23 pairs of chromosomes, assuming evolution would add a new pair, thus 46 & 2), Jimmy seems almost prophetic of 9-11, or an analogy for the union of what seems to be separate ("one and one, are one, eleven, so glow, child, glow, I am headed back home").

This album is simply perfect! This Message Edited On 01.06.09

One of the best albums in the last 20 years. Classic stuff.

Best Tool album but still relatively boring and laced with pointless filler.

"Stinkfist maybe isn't mindblowing technically, but the texture, lyrics, vocals and structure of the song are just fantastic. Also I feel every other song on this album warrants an 8/10 or higher. Eulogy and 46 & 2 are also almost as excellent as my favorite aforementioned tracks."

I agree with you. The lyrics are really fantastic. Metaphoric or not. ;)

I would actually start with Undertow even though it's not as good. the first three songs on it are very catchy and easy to get into. Then move onto this and lateralus.

Well written review good sir. I agree with the Adam Jones statement. Hes much better with creating certain moods and atmospheres. Like on Euology where in the middle he just scratches the strings and its just perfect.

I don't like this album as much. Sure, Aenima and Third Eye are good, but the filler is retarded, and it's just kind of boring, and it seems separated to me.

What filler?

Unless you mean Harry Manback and Die Eier Von Satan and crap. Those are just Maynard messing with listeners, and shouldn't really be counted.

It wouldn't be a Tool album without them

Some of these songs are really shitty. Even though i'm not a fan i've heard all their albums and i think Lateralus is the best.. even I have to admit some of the songs on that are great.

I feel like Im in the minority when I say Lateralus bores the crap out of me. Its good and all, but I have to be in the mood (grabbing my copy of Aenima lol)

Laterlus and 10,000 days bore me

This album is millions of miles better than either.

I've now listened to Undertow, which was great, especially Sober, but now that I've listened to this.... wow. I tried some Tool a bit less than a year ago, and I didn't like it one bit. I guess it was listening to this first that went wrong.

Great album.

Die Eir Von Satan is actually recipe for cookies in german. I used a german to english translator.

The good songs in this album are good and the bad are actually not that bad.
