people keep talking about the number of ballads like that's a bad thing but really that doesn't matter at all as long as they're good (they're not)

Dream Theater ballads almost universally suck. A double album of Dream Theater ballads is a sure-thing bomb.

The first half of Repentance is fantastic and This is the Life is good. Besides those two, all their other ballads in the past decade or so aren't really worth it imo

I'm not saying they haven't got lucky once or twice (I'm thinking of one of the ballads on Awake and one of the ballads on Scenes), but mostly they're terrible.

Willie please never change your avi XD

I mentioned in the past decade b/c I've actually come to enjoy a lot of the ballads they did in the 90s and early 00s. Vacant, Lifting Shadows..., Wait for Sleep, and plenty of others are great.

Ha ha. The first time I rate something, I only have the ratings that are available to everyone. Then I have to go the first page and click the little 'Change' link next to my rating to get all the smaller increments and adjust the original rating. So, I did that but clicked the wrong rating the second time... such is life.

Lol!

I removed my 5 because I'm being proven on here it's clearly not that perfect. Thank you all for helping me realize it. New music tends to overwhelm me and I think it's the greatest thing in the world... Which then you hear it multiple times and realize where it fits in with your collection. Like the new star wars movie being a 9.5 release day and now an 8.4.

Thanks for the people that said the review was good, pretty surprised no one said anything negative about my review. I wanted to talk about Mangini sounding like LaBrie programmed the drums on this record but I couldn't find a place to fit that sentence...

ha, maybe put a P.S. in the end! Most users would agree anyway.

@djr2 Nothing wrong with overexcitement. You like what you like. It's wonderful though to see new users being open minded and accepting on others' opinions. Keep up being cool.

They should get the drummer from LaBrie's solo band, Peter Wildoer.

@mythodea thanks man, appreciate it. I'm always open to opinion now. I still enjoy the album and the review pretty much sums up the problems I have.

So get this, the nomacs (the spheres on the front cover), aren't explained where they come from in the album. Why? They had 2 hours. Its overlooked. They added a full story for the album on the official website but I don't want to have to explain to friends to go there, read the first paragraph and then listen to the album. Besides, in 10-15 years the site may be taken down, which will make the album more confusing

Willie, in fact Wildoer was one of their choices in the final act of their drumming interviews to replace Portnoy. So was Marco Minnemann.. I still don't understand how they could have let this one go...
