"listening to sunbather after this kind of makes sunbather unfocused i must admit"
yeah but focused on what? it's boring still
|
| |
its not boring at all. just sometimes a bit too ambitious and all over the place. like forcing a post-rock part into a song just for the sake of it, even when it doesnt really fit. thats what i meant with unfocused

Sunbather was obviously a masterstroke, but what I think sets this album apart so greatly is that they are definitely trying to step out and progress in different directions, having already conquered their starting ground. Thus it is only to be expected that those who loved Sunbather would maybe not enjoy certain aspects of New Bermuda while loving others. I'm glad they are taking chances and stepping into unruly territory because I think diversity breeds longevity.
Whenever there is a part that I am musically questionable of, when I look at it from the perspective of the atmosphere Deafheaven is creating in the song, it helps me to appreciate it for it's contribution in their overall atmospheric shifts. However, there is one aspect of this album that I wish was a bit stronger and is worth comparing to Sunbather, namely, the lyrical content (while being far superior to standard BM lyricism) is not of the same superior and poetic caliber as that of Sunbather.
All in all, excellent album and excellent review, I think many people simply hyped themselves up for something different.
PS. when he says "and the madness of the undertow" in Come Back, it sounds kvlt af

The part after the solo (that apparently everyone hates) in Baby Blue is so good though

I hadn't listened to this band since SUN BAT HER released. Didn't enjoy their music back then but now I kinda like both this and SUN BAT HER.

Surprised of all the good reviews, most people diss this band everytime someone brings them up.

there's always a dissenter available to put in their two cents because of how popular they are, but their albums have all received high acclaim.

And they're all great (well, this is so far. Only at track 2, but I'm enjoying it).

They're definitely a pretty beloved band critically but for some reasons people either love to hate them or troll them

or maybe they don't like the music

Lol obviously, there's still no denying that they receive an unwarranted about of trolling comments. In the past at least the Sunbather thread is full of them.
