I was not prepared for how good this was.

Did you have low expectations? I'm not trying to be a jerk, I just (personally) don't think this is that great.
It's not terrible either though.

I swung from being barely interested in hearing the album to ordering tickets to see them live.

Wow, damn. You've listened to their other stuff?

All of you here should try to erase the word "core" from your brains and just go jam Priest instead

Yeah. I enjoy Horizons a lot. Deep Blue was pretty good. Fell off with Atlas.
I heard a ton of great things about this record. Outside from sputnik the consensus is overwhelmingly positive about Ire.
Still wasn't convinced. Gave it a shot and was blown away. But yes, the extremity of my reaction was mostly because I had low expectations.

don't really know how people are bashing on Atlas when it's the second highest rated album on here

I got bored with their sound because the band had not progressed since Killing with a Smile. I heard a really apt analogy that was in line with my opinion. Atlas is like a Xerox of a xerox of a xerox of a xerox.
Ultimately It's still the same picture. Every time you re-copy that picture though, you lose more and more of what was originally there.

@NonApplicable Hey, someone who agrees with me! Album slays. This is just one of those Sputnik idiosyncrasies like the latest Slipknot; overwhelmingly positive reception everywhere but here.

@Ebola
I find that sputnik is getting more and more like that. I personally wouldn't put too much credibility here because I feel like sputnik can often be a vocal minority. It seems like there a ton of this people here who spend 90% of their time bashing music they dislike and 10% listening to the stuff they enjoy.
@Adolf
I like Writings on the Wall. It's basically a really good version of King 810 for the first bit. I do think that part is a tad too long but not offensively so. The rest of the song is pretty epic and well done. That piano at the end is particularly beautiful.
What was cringeworthy about it?

Yeah, it seems like it's way easier for people to bash on something than to appreciate something.
Also, way easier to bash others for liking something they don't like (that's what happens more often)

To me, I don't even hate the vocals, the music itself just feels boring and uninspired.

it could be that we're universally comprised of music nerds with generally stricter taste and analytical minds as opposed to the common music listener

Also, I really believe that people generally like to bash something more than praise something. Not just here, but life in general.
