'this is just mainstream indie rock done right tbh'

You're not wrong. Each album differentiates itself nicely, and while Holy Fire was weaker than the first two, I think this is a step back up.

First two songs are just as good as the last two. Albatross is also one of their best.

I stopped listening to this. Never pulled me in. I even bought it instead of pirating, so I guess I better keep trying.

I love when "Night Swimmers" really kicks up halfway through the song. Gorgeous work. Loving this album.

'I even bought it instead of pirating'

Bad decision man. I only buy if I know I enjoy it, or if it's really cheap. At that point, pirating is just a trial to see if you enjoy something enough to buy it.

Continuing to refine their distinctive style of indie-rock, Foals deliver another excellent release with 4th LP 'What Went Down'. Produced by James Ford, the quintet are truly in synch with each other here, yet each member regularly gets to shine. The rhythm section especially deserve special praise, while it's heartening to know the band haven't forgotten their mathy roots. Engrossing & intense, no matter what the tempo of the track, all 10 songs will undoubtedly go down a treat live. Arguably their most consistent set of tunes, there may be no obvious standout, but there is also next to no filler. Recommeded Tracks: Mountain at My Gates, Albatross, London Thunder & Lonely Hunter.

I still recall how long it took me to take in, and then review 'TLF'. I'm all Foals'd out.

I found the same thing with TLF, it was immense and tbh I still don't quite "get" that album. Their last two albums have been much easier to digest though.

Also this review is pretty good, so there is no need for Davey to swoop in and rescue the day.

Total Life Forever is their highpoint for sure. But Holy Fire is more similar to this.

Antidote is by far their best album, but it's noticeably different compared to this album and indeed the rest of their albums.
