Is it the wrong time to say 'Mutations' is a little bit better?

Never really given that a proper listen.
What’s the one where he is a proper soppy bollocks? Used to think a few songs off that were stunning but this is the only one that has been a constant for me over the years.

'Mutations' is a mix of experimental and (entertaining) pastiche and basically the folk/country counterpart for this, 'Midnite Vultures' is the 'Prince goof' one and secretly a bit shit, then there are two soppy/diva'ish ones...the better one is the first 'Sea Change', then he effectively rerecorded it with 'Morning Phase' and won a grammy for it (though it is also secretly a bit shit)

this and paul's boutique make me think dust brothers might've been the best producers in the world at one point

They also produced Hanson's "MMMBop"

‘Mutations’ has a very special atmosphere, his second best imo, but the creative bursts on this one cannot be topped. And there’s also ‘Ramshackle’, a Mutations-type campfire song with breathtaking guitar work.

Hanson is still around after 20+ years, just sayin’.

MMMBop's instrumentation is very infectious, just wish I didn't dislike the chorus lol
