Probably the same reason all these bands keep going independent--so they can have more freedom to do whatever they want on their albums. For a few bands/artists, it works--for most, it fails.

I actually liked their early stuff, but after Phenomenon every album has been a struggle to copy it.
This is just as awful as their previous album. Liked 1-2 songs but I'm not even gonna give them a second listen.

I could make that argument with Masquerade and TEIWWB, but I can certainly agree with you on Art of Breaking which is basically a carbon copy of Phenomenon.
