They've always had those synths going, so I don't see why it's that surprising that they finally went full ambient, especially when that ambient is based on their previous record. I mean, Burzum did it, at the very least.

I'm pretty sure this was simply meant as a complement for Celestial Lineage and therefore a justified excuse to explore their more ambient leanings for a change. Wouldn't expect another ambient album after this one. At least not immediately. I haven't read any interviews to back this up, but that's just how I see it.

It is so much better than using the name to churn out mall metal to stay relevant.

Some of their best moments were their ambient bits before, that being said I find it hard to get into this.
