Our Fortress Is Burning is great, one of my favourite things Agalloch has done.

yeah parts 1 and 2 together is one of my favorite things ever. part 3 is aight, pretty cool way to end the album. sometimes i skip it, but it doesn't take anything away from my enjoyment of the album at all

Ah, didn't pick up your humor, sorry Bergtatt. And yes I love the "Our Fortress Is Burning" trilogy

Second full spin here, but my biggest complaint is the sheer number of parts that just sound thrown together. Also, there are a handful of transitions that seemingly come out of nowhere. Hopefully this with smooth out on repeated listens.
I still have no idea what to rate this album.

Straight-faced mockery has gotten me into trouble online before, it's cool. Sometimes I'm not even
sure what the joke is, beneath the layers of British solemnity, that made my metaphorical my lip
curl in the first place. That Deafheaven solo is the WORST, though!
Anyway, the way I see it, this album is a continuation of that (Our Fortress Is Burning) idea -
insidious creeping dynamism, and (a lot more) mature restraint. I think the vibes and imagery evoked
are very different though, which might be what's putting a lot of people off. It's BIG - I
mean, it's still very personal, but you're looking out at the world in your solitude, it's not
introspective and internally-focused in the way a lot of previous Agalloch has been. The vision is
"grander" - glaciers and frozen seas and fjords and aurora painting green fire across the starless
skyline, not a lone walk in a snowy forest. It's so OPEN, and I love it for that. I've warmed to
Wizard's wisdom and taken it down a peg to 4.5... I think these albums do need some time, however
certain I am now that this is one of my favourite Agalloch releases, but yeah, I adore it. Sure,
maybe I just don't "get" why it's actually objectively bad - but I'm glad I don't.

Fuck any attempt to make music objective, agreed.
It would be cool if people could be completely unbiased towards music tho, but that's impossible.
Unless you're piss ofc. Most objective user on the site by far.

"Anyway, the way I see it, this album is a continuation of that (Our Fortress Is Burning) idea"
Except that Our Fortress is Burning works and this doesn't. Our Fortress is Burning makes sense,
while this is just a mess, in my opinion.
"The vision is "grander" - glaciers and frozen seas and fjords and aurora painting green fire across
the starless skyline, not a lone walk in a snowy forest."
I agree with you that the vision is grander, but, for me, the transition from the personal to what
you describe happened somewhere around Limbs, Fallen Snow, Fire Above Ice Below. "Green fire across
the starless skyline" is Not Unlike the Waves. Marrow dealt with gods and spirits of Earth, ancient
mythology. The grandeur
of this album is cosmic. I don't get anything remotely natural about it. It's way to harsh and
ugly to convey any sort of natural atmosphere.

Seems like a weird mix of repetition and exclusivity (was washed down the river/that was left behind). You use one metaphor, then a different one to describe... a set of things you're trying to include in the first? Maybe replacing "that was left behind" with "that was lacking from" (or something) would help.
This is actually a good point and now that I read it in that light you're correct. I'll think of something to change it to. Thanks for the feedback there.
how does it feel to be in agreement with Darknoctus, Kyle?
I can't imagine it
Back in the day him and I agreed on a lot of stuff but now our thoughts are more divergent. Same thing with Wizard.

I listened to this a couple of times and this is by far their worst album. A 2 seems a bit harsh but
the review is a good read.

wonder how this fell off Trending Albums so fast

can albums fall off the list for not having a high enough score?
edit: apparently so since the full Trending list doesn't show this at all. Kinda lame.

read the thread, this is pretty funny:
"If you are not up to listen to multilayered music, I advise you again, listen to some crap Iron Maiden, Insomnium or any other generic metal band."
calling iron maiden generic hahahaha.

how do you feel about the end of the album gyro? i find the end to be so underwhelming. the last track
would be fine as an interlude, but to close out the album?
|
| |
yah i was hoping they'd bookend it or something, the last track felt very interlude-y. plateau of the ages would have been an excellent song to go out on (probably my favourite on the album)
