overall this review is really great. you do a good job of addressing Glover's growth while noting that it may have been for the wrong reasons / forced out of him.

there are a few continuity issues (and by issues i mean things to note,) so check these out:

Sonically, Because the Internet is an ambitious mess of experimental success and perfunctory failures – as a whole, the production is stellar and largely innovative.

very good points here, but it feels a bit curious that they'd be included in the same sentence. Last part reads as if it could begin another paragraph entirely, with how positive it is.

in and out of a somber orchestral interlude that you might hear during a particularly moody segment of FX’s Louie

i just have to point this out because I love Louie and #solidarity

“Shadows”, which sports a tight, noodling math rock (yeah you read that right) beat

Hmmmm, what makes you see it as math rock? Shadows was sampled from a song that's more funk/disco than anything, and the usual characteristics of math rock (playing with time signatures, instrumental dexterity) aren't present in the track. If you're gonna make bold statements like these, make sure they're spot-on

For the impressive work on the boards though, Gambino’s lyricism has taken a step back. Previously an almost exclusively punchline rapper, there are few to be found on the album.

I actually think you could erase these sentences entirely, as they obfuscate your overall message about Glover's performance here and feel a little trite / unnecessary.

e’s varying his flows more but verses are now emaciated banalities, sometimes even truncated 4-6 bar offerings that just seem longer due to his acrobatics and the difference that the instrumentals truly make

so many words here, quite a bit tiring to read. and "emaciated banalities" is a bit too wordy for me

and that, coupled with Donald Glover’s bipolar identity disorder is what ultimately makes his newest album little more than a well-wrapped platitude.

Whoa, so what are we saying about him having bipolar disorder? I'm unsure what your point is about it, and it'd be very easy to misconstrue your message into something unfair towards Glover. as in "ah so if he didn't have bipolar disorder, this record would be more substantial?" not even sure he *actually* is bipolar but i'm playing devil's advocate here.

this was kind of meant to serve as somewhat of a thesis statement; i wanted to put the good and the bad on the same equal plane to say that imo there were equal parts good and bad and that when they evened out ("it's just basic math") my rating came to a 2.5. That's kind of all it was in terms of why i put them in the same sentence.

I guess I don't know quite as much about math rock as i'd like and i wasn't sure if i really wanted to say this but the way i think about different genres is there are technical aspects that you can discuss ad infinitum ("so-and-so genres can be characterized by always having blah time signatures and drumming techniques a, b, and c, etc") and then there are the sonic undeniables (psure this isn't a word but i hope what i'm saying makes sense) - the things that you hear in the melodies and harmonies and shit that you can't describe with a strictly musical lexicon; things that usher colorful or emotional descriptions out of a reviewer/listener.

here my whole math rock comment was less about the time signatures and more about the sound of the beat. the noodliness on that beat reminded me of the types of 'melodies' you might hear on like the new this town needs guns album or like tera melos or something (i think "melody 3" i remember being one of the things that convinced me that it would be okay to say this bc even though there's a lot of interesting shit going on in the background with the drums and such, the guitars are doing stuff akin to what i was hearing on the shadows beat. i guess if i'm wrong i'm wrong; i don't want to be giving off the wrong impression in my review but that's just kind of the thinking process i went through when i wrote it.

For the impressive work on the boards though, Gambino’s lyricism has taken a step back. Previously an almost exclusively punchline rapper, there are few to be found on the album.

hmm okay, i really just wanted to point this out as i feel like corny punchlines were really his calling card in the past, and that was one of the first things i noticed here as i was sitting down with the lyrics open, waiting for the first punchline that never hit.

'banalities' was literally a post-posting edit; i had just posted the review and realized that i had used a different word there (i think platitude) that i was using elsewhere in the review to better effect, so i wanted to just quick-edit it so i didn't get called out on it. I get what you're saying though, perhaps i ought to take another look at this one.

hehe yeah this was another sentence i spent some time thinking about (i tend to spend a lot of time analyzing whether it's okay for me to say shit in reviews). the point here is the same one i made somewhere earlier in this thread, that he is constantly changing styles every release and never finally just settles on a Childish Gambino personality. I wasn't sure if i wanted to put this in the review seeing as how I really hadn't brought it up at all earlier in the review and i think the sentence here is vague enough (actually the fact that you brought it up with the concern you had is evidence that it really is too vague) to make people think 'wait wtf'. i wasn't sure if i should make it more explicit in this last sentence or just omit it completely. i kind of wanted to talk about it earlier in the review but i never found much of a place to put it so i just kind of threw it on at the end there but to the analytic eye it's obviously an issue - just unsure if it's a problem at all times. i'll see if i can find a better way to put it, or i might just get rid of it completely.

it's a shame that he's devoting more time to this than to tv when it's so clear that acting is exactly what he's doing as a rapper

but i mean if he likes it i guess w/e
