No progression? Hmmmm.

Here we go...

I'm gonna leave this one alone and shake hands with you brother and say "Good Day!".

its more refinement than progression in my opinion, (although you could consider refinement progression). they took the song structures and post metal style of TDOA and combined them with the violence of EIF to refine their sound, as opposed to going in a direction that they havent covered yet.

yeah exactly, i wouldnt call that progression. theyve already done this, theyre just combining the sounds of their two previous albums.

If they’re going to carve out a real legacy, then Hoggard, Kelland, and Saint-Merat will inevitably have to rebuild from the ground up as all the greats do. For now, however, Ulcerate has something special going

good review, but I don't think this is necessary in order for the band to have a "real legacy". maybe I'm not clear on what you mean by "rebuild from the ground up". either way, this part sounds a little contradictory to me.

Ulcerate are just playing their style, which is unique. most other bands' styles are closer to the "traditions" of dm in some ways, and regardless of their progression or lack thereof, I hardly ever see the same kinds of comments in reference to them.

I mean change their sound in a major way. Some of the long-running death metal bands -- think Entombed, Autopsy, Ctyptopsy, Obituary, Suffocation -- started out with two or three classic albums and then faded despite putting out similarly styled works. On the other hand, Death is the archetype for reinventing yourself mid-career to remain at the top of the genre.

fair point. I think in some of those bands' cases, their mid-career declines also had as much to do with a genuine decline in perceived quality (i.e. bad production, uninspired riffs/song writing, or changes to sound that weren't as well-received, a la death 'n' roll) as it had to do with stagnancy and re-hashing what they had already done.

I agree with your point on Death, that's one of the reasons they're my fav band basically. but probably my second fav dm band is Immolation. honestly, I look at their career and yeah they made some changes to their sound but nothing like Death did from Spiritual Healing to Human, and ITP to Symbolic, etc. they've just managed to make effective music and do what they do best.

definitely not saying that switching things up is a bad thing, but I think Immolation's reputation and legacy is a testament to my thinking, in that a band doesn't necessarily need to re-invent themselves to have a "real legacy", because I think there are also a lot of examples of consistently amazing bands who made some necessary progressions but also recognized when certain things worked and built upon that.

Immolation is certainly a testament to stylistic stability -- and considering they're highly comparable to Ulcerate, that's worth noting. I may have phrased it a bit strongly so I'll take another look.

i just expect more from Ulcerate because theyre a fairly forward-thinking bad with a unique sound and intelligent songwriting, so id like to hear some experimentation from them instead of the same formula over and over again. im not tired of it yet but when the next album comes around i might be pretty disappointed if they dont make some changes.
