it's perfectly understandable why people enjoy this band.
the question is why they enjoy it this much.

Hep Kat what have you done... C-C-C-C-C-COMBO BREAKER

How does the reviewer not know shit about pop punk? He captures the feel of the genre very well.
|

The review also spends far too much time picking apart the lyrics and doesn't really have anything to say about the actual sound of the album besides that it sounds like pop punk

If I meant that literally I wouldn't be review The Wonder Years and referencing their old work.
What I meant by that was on the charts, or in popular circulation. Pop-punk used to be massive, everyone knew Yellowcard and Jimmy Eat World and even fucking Bowling For Soup. If you really think The Story So Far and stuff like it is at the same exposure level as All Time Low and Boys Like Girls and Panic! at the Disco, let alone those older bands then you're wrong.

That's all well and good, I hate those bands too. Still doesn't make me wrong or ignorant of the genre.

Passing Through a Screen Door And Dismantling Summer are fantastic. Going to give this a few more listens before I rate it (will most likely be a 4 or higher). So far it's not quite as catchy as their other records, though. I think I'm in the minority in that The Upsides is still my favorite.

why are there people who haven't heard the queers?

I just read this, absolutely excellent review. Really nicely done man. It'd be cool to see more writing like this on sputnik.

hep pick your battles better. this guy may have not heard all the trve pop-punk (lol god I hate you when you're like this) but it doesn't hurt the message of the review at all. his point was well thought out, well argued, and well written. The Queers were never as popular as the bands that he mentioned, and he was clearly trying to write a review that speaks to a lot of people. the whole "oh bro you haven't heard band X therefore you can't have an opinion on genre Y" shtick is pretty silly. Sometimes it's relevant, very rarely, but you pull it out every time you disagree with someone's rating. This review is a really good piece of writing, stop focusing on the fact that he listed bands you don't like or that he's never heard music by The Queers.

I don't think an album should receive a Classic rating when it is just released it should have to stand the test of time like other "classic" albums. That being said this band has grown up so much it's crazy and continues to release great pop punk music. A fan of the band and pop punk should be able to get into this album. Cul-de-sac is definitely my favorite song so far.Love the reference to You're Not Sallinger Get over it

maybe he should've said descendents or lifetime, because they're who a lot of pop punk bands like to rip off of.

Are they really relevant to the review though? It was long enough as is without referencing 80s and 90s stuff. This wasn't supposed to be The Complete Guide to Pop-Punk, and the guys in The Wonder Years weren't even born when Descendents' best stuff came out.
EDIT; Before someone puts words in my mouth, obviously the band and the genre owe a lot to those bands. But that doesn't necessarily mean they're worth namedropping in this particular review.

listen, you guys can sit here and throw out your "elite" pop-punk bands all you want, it doesn't change my point. Most people listened to stuff like Taking Back Sunday and Blink back in high school, so that's why he chose the albums/bands he chose. There's no point in sitting around trying to act like he had great taste in high school when this review is about the stuff that was popular amongst 16 yr olds in 2003. Descendents rule, The Queers too, but no one listened to that shit in high school (ok ok, yeah you did, "you're so cool"). All my friends jammed the well-known albums, obviously.
"because they're who a lot of pop punk bands like to rip off of."
this is completely irrelevant. I'm not sure how you aren't understanding my point. It's very, very basic.
