The reason Scream Bloody Gore has the credit as the first notable pure DM album compared to this is that that album is actually very good. This isn't, but it's not terrible.

that whole world occupied by sop, obscura (the bands, not albums), necrophagist is pretty bad but i try getting into em every 1-2 years

of course but they dont really sound alike imo other than just being pre-scott burnz early dm production style

i agree they dont sound alike
this is good but not very remarkable, unlike early death, early ma, insanity even now thats an underrated band

i got death after death in the DDR labor day sale, its great shit but this is just more fun imo
tbh if death had split in say, 1990, all their shit would have 50-100 ratings like a lot of the other early dm classix. most of us born in the 90s onward got into them through one of their polished tech records and half the people giving TSOP a 5 prolly think SBG is "elementary."
i would love to peer into this timeline

>and half the people giving TSOP a 5 prolly think SBG is "elementary."
thats on them lol
i kinda get what you're saying but i disagree, sbg and leprosy especially simply have songwriting that 99% of dm regardless of year doesnt have, even stuff like deicide, benediction, vader, malveolent creation are B tier if not C compared to that shit
chuck (and trey w/ ma, and the pestilence guys, atheist, etc) knew how to write songs on a completely other level... too bad he ran out of ideas by the 90s. if you really pay attention to sbg, the writing is more dynamic, less formulaic, yes its primitive in many ways but you could still see serious glimpses of human era stuff. most dm just feels "by the numbers" in comparison

i do agree that necrophagist are kind of overrated, but at the same time they are probably the most influential tech death band of the 2000s or at least close

oh i love the early death stuff but i think the fact that its death is why weve all heard those records 2000 times. youre right that you can see chucks knack for melody early on and the production on sbg and especially leprosy is a lot cleaner than any other pre-1990 dm but there are just a lot of other records that satisfy the need for raw filthy early dm stuff for me, music that has more of a blackened, heavier edge anyway. still classic stuff though but chucks inner desire to be in queensryche or fates warning is exactly why im glad i have shit like this or abominations or poison into the abyss to satisfy a certain itch
oddly enough my fav death record is probably spiritual healing since its sort of a transitional bridge album between both eras but i think all their records are sweet in their own way

by now its possible i could get more into necrophagist since in the past couple of years of being obsessed with death metal again ive gotten into deeds of flesh, the early nile stuff, lots of things i didnt really vibe with before. ive also really gotten into a lot of other 90s brutal tech dm shit whereas if youd asked me in 2013 i woulda said everything except first 3 suffo and first 2 cryptopsy was garbage for posers

i dont necessarily think necrophagist are even overrated just cause their influence is so concrete and obvious, i genuinely wish i dug them more. i can dig it in small doses and i like the bass a lot but theres just not a lot for me to latch on to there, same with spawn of possession and obscura although necro are def better

if obscura was instrumental theyd probably kick ass. they had the same bassist pestilence used on spheres
