Any Hecker bump is a good bump. Don't listen to this record much compared to the 3 before it, but it's still amazing

This record finally "clicked" for me. I may bump this to a 4.5 soon, I get why this is so highly regarded. I always thought it was as good as any other Hecker record but I think his drone really shines through here, at least on the first half.

It's also arguably the most accessible Hecker album for non ambient listeners. But yeah, although the second half is good I really prefer the first half, through Harmony in Blue Suite basically. Chimeras and Dungeoneering are both incredible

Dungeoneering is proof that rhythm is important in ambient composition

What is your definition of rhythm?

Hmm, maybe rhythm isn't the right term? What I mean is that that song's base composition has a pretty rigid pulse/meter to it, so the ear is naturally drawn to the elements of the song that don't line up with that meter, and the feel of the piece changes entirely when the meter kind of falls apart in the last minute or so. I think it illustrates that just cuz ambient artists don't use much or any percussion doesnt mean that tempo, time signature, etc. aren't tools they can use to cultivate an atmosphere.

I guess I'd say that it's important, but not strictly necessary. Like I view Tim's piece "Spectral" as genius because it so carefully walks the line between structured and structureless. It evades any sort of classification of structure, but while listening to it, it clearly has direction and intention to it.

And it's hard when looping is so prevalent in ambient music, you don't really know where something becomes rhythm and time signature and where it isn't. Like, how would you characterize a song like "I'm Transmitting Tonight"?

I agree that it isn't neccesary, working with more impressionistic, drone/glitch-based soundscapes gives you tons more freedom in how you approach rhythm or lack thereof. But I think a big part of what makes so much of Hecker's work so interesting is how aware it seems to be of tempo and rhythm. A piece like, say, Highwire Shrimper isn't so much lacking in a steady rhythm as it is deliberately evading it, whereas I'm Transmitting tonight loosens up the rhythm to the point where it feels more flowing and naturalistic while still, I think, keeping the composition generally focused towards the steady build up to the trebly piano(?) notes that start each loop. Even when a piece of his feels really meterless or structureless it still sounds like a lot of attention was paid to what's going on rhythm-wise, which is a major reason why I like his stuff more than most other ambient music I've listened to.

Was listening to this and realized I havent checked much of his other work. I didnt like his most recent releases, but I need to try those again to be fair. I do really love ravedeath too though. I guess Virgins and Radio Amor are next.

Don't sleep on Mirages even though it's got a 3.7 on this site. It's just as worthy albeit more subdued (but in a good way).

Wild to think that Hecker went from mirages to this in 2 years, like don't get me wrong both albums are great but he really made a quantum leap around 2005 or so
