I agree 9 is an amazing game and is better than 10 in some ways. I do think the card game fails hard in comparison to 8's which was perfect. My only real complaint with 9 is that the combat feels a tiny bit slower compared to previous entries but its not a huge deal. Sadly I know a lot of people that never get into 9 because they deem the characters and art direction too "kiddie" when it fact 9 has some of the deepest characters and darkest themes in the series. Also one of my favorite parts of 9 is the fact that its 2 players, my friend and i played through the whole game a while back and it was a blast.

9 is great, characters are hilarious but the games also really dark by the end

Well 9 is a long game but tbh its not that hard so you wouldn't have to waste time grinding for a long time or anything. If you could commit a hour or 2 a day you'd have it beat sooner than later.

Unless of course you want to beat the hardest boss in any ff game, the secret boss in 9 haha

I still need to play through 8 and 9.

And 13... I guess... for completionist's sake...

Ugh 13 is actually "alright" once you get further into it but fuck that game is so repetitive and the story and characters make me wanna gouge my eyes out. The sequels are even worse and those i never will play through.

I made it about four hours in and kind of lost interest. The characters are so obnoxious and I felt so railroaded in the plot. I'll finish it at some point. If I can make it through 12, I can make it through any of them!

8 and 9 I haven't made past on the second disk of either, but it's been a while since I've tried.

Interesting that you said you know people that don't like 9 because of its art style, because that's really the only thing I can tangibly say about why I don't like the game. 8, I feel has more fundamental problems with the battle system than anything story-related.

But once I'm done with those I've finished all the beatable games in the main series (not counting sequels to games in the main series like 13-2 and 13-3).

Suppose I could always get one of them cheat disc things and max out the character's, that's where all the hours go!

Meh, I got my challenges from VIII lol. I don't get a great deal of time to play games these days, so that seems like the best option.

Best FF game. FFVII is really good too though it just hasn't aged well. It definitely needed the remake more than VI but man VI in HD would be amazing assuming that the voice acting isn't grating.

I actually really liked XIII up until about halfway through the game. The characters were interesting, and I really like that there was conflict within your own party, and then *poof*, it was all gone and everyone was a big happy family.

It really killed my interest in the game, since the battle system and remaining story were pretty weak. It's still a pretty game though.

IX is def my favorite though!

XIII was pretty amazing in terms of sheer audio/visual presentation, but the game itself was... eh in my opinion. I thought the story was pretty silly at times and for being so linear it felt as if it lacked what every character had, ironically - focus. I didn't very much like the characters but I agree that the dynamic of internal conflict was interesting while it lasted.

Battle system was honestly not that bad if you ask me. I quite liked it after a little bit of time.

I thought it was interesting (read: not particularly good) that it just threw you right into the middle of a conflict without explaining one bit of what was going on. The first time I played the game, I remember being very confused at a lot of the terms (L'Cie? Fal'Cie? Cocoon? Sanctum? Pulse? WUT). It was cleared up on a second playthrough, but by then I was pretty over the game. I agree about the lack of focus... it pretty much permeated the entire game, from the story to the characters.

The battle system wasn't terrible, but I prefer being in control of my entire party. That's why the battle systems from XII on have been pretty disappointing to me.

I really liked being able to use 4 characters in IX, and the way you could see upcoming turns in X was really cool from a strategical/tactical standpoint. At least until you became so OP you killed everything before it could move.

FFVIII is so much better than its individual elements would suggest

the plot is messed up for a start. actually it is really funny that your career on Disc 1 consists of getting a sword in the face, then being literally chased out of the city you're doing an exam in by a huge robot, then screwing up two assassination attempts and going to jail... but everything that happens after the reunion on Disc 2 is idiotic and unnecessary, not just because of the end boss being revealed to be a sorceress in another time frame altogether but also because of the all-important-characters-are-related-to-one-another thing - this might be the correct approach in scriptwriting for a movie, but fantasy games with an undefined playtime should have MASSIVE and unrelated casts of characters

secondly every enemy encounter was either so weak you could just sit in front of it using Draw or else the type of fuck-you monster that casts Confuse, Death and Meteor whenever it likes

thirdly it has some of the most obscure side-quests ever, with the UFO hunt, those weird Chocobo forest puzzles and the way you needed to deliberately lose cards to certain players to unlock ones later in the game being an all-star line-up of cryptickness

fourth uh the font is ugly

The battle system was XIII's strongest asset. I don't see why people rip it.
