Yeah, Jethro is completely right.
''...their music has proven to be very hard to get into, but it is even harder to live without it".
This is the kind of music that you love or hate it. For me, it's simply amazing and unforgettable.

It took me longer to get into this than it did H to He or pawn hearts. Really glad I kept at it though

I fell in love ALMOST immediately with this band... Mainly due to the fact that I chose to listen Still Life first... Such a supreme album...

Yeah, Still Life was also my baptism with the band. And the two best albums to start with VDGG are, in my opinion, Still Life and H to He. Probably Pawn Hearts is the less indicate, because despite is probably their best album, but is much less accessible because is much more complex.

godbluff is my only vdgg album

Godbluff is and always was my fave album from them. However, I admit that Pawn Hearts can be their masterful work. Anyway, I still think that Still Life and H to He are there most accessible albums. These are clearly, for me, their four best albums.
If you can, get the other three smaugman.

Have you hear to World Record? Very underrated imo.

I agree, Mythodea. Still Life and World Record are my first purchases of them. Personally I love the album. It's probably the most personal album of Hammill of the VDGG discography. I particularly love the last track Wondering, where Banton shows his skills as a composer. And yes, it's really a very underrated album. However I still think the other four are better albums. VDGG is simply one of my fave groups.

The second side of World Record is one of their strongest sets, but the first side is VdGG by numbers.

None of the songs of side one (World Record) would have made the cut on their previous albums. And Meurglys III is great but much too long. Its reggae sequence drags on, and the Hammill's guitar playing is horrendous. Its only perfect song is Wondering. When she Comes is not bad.
My fave albums by VDGG are in order Still Life, Pawn Hearts, Godbluff and H to HE. I used to listen more to H to HE than I did for Godbluff. H to HE is really a pleasant jam.

Hammill's guitar playing is one of the best things on the album. It's amateurish as fuck and it fits perfectly the theme of the song. Man is alone and all he's left with is his guitar and his broken, raw chords. Had it been the virtuoso Fripp playing on the song, all the magic would have gone.

Seen from that angle, I can understand it's intended to be that way. But I've heard that Hammill has never been a good guitarist from the word go, so I guess he was the ideal guy for that track. Fripp would have been able to play the broken guitar him too, but I get your point.
