@Friday, I never noticed every GG albums have their ballads, except for Three Friends and Interview. The debut album has ''Isn't it Quiet and Cold''. Their last three albums surely contain some as well.
As for the most talented musician, I think it's Ray Shulman who impresses me the most. Anyway, he puts the things all together with Kerry Minnear, two exceptional multi-instrumentalists. Both composed or co-wrote most of the songs.
@Gwyn, yeah, they know how to organize the chaos, like RikRoach said earlier in the thread.

Cool Jethro, yeah you're right it was mostly Ray and Kerry.

Oh wait, ''Give it Back'' from Interview is also a ballad. They have the knack to do amazing ballads as well...''His Last Voyage'' is a top 3 of mine, ''Aspirations'' is probably a top 10, and ''Think of me with kindness has a gorgeous melody.

The vocal complexities of Knots are simply masterful

Yeah it rules, I just listened to it, and shame on me, I ranked it much too low into my old top 25 GG songs list. It seems that its ranking depends on how I feel. List could be a little different today...or even everyday's changing ;)

Knots is definitely in my top 3 favorite Gentle Giant songs. One of their most insane tracks, and that's obviously saying a lot

Song is in a different class, for sure. For that reason I could place it in my top 10, but for some reason, I can't. Maybe I've listened to it too often (I bought Octopus late in the 70s)...One thing is sure, I just relistened to it, and it's still eargasmic. I will have to replace Knots higher into my list, I can see it.

"List could be a little different today...or even everyday's changing ;)"
That's pretty much Gentle Giant in general. Every time I revisit an album of theirs, I find some new brilliant aspect I didn't hear the first time around, and then I have to revise my list of their best work. lol

Ya right, and GG are so consistent, we are forced to forget some gems on the way.

I only know this, P&TG and Three Friends, but up until now I can say that they are surprisingly consistent and surprisingly versatile at the same time. They have a unique style, but at the same time they are able to take it to different directions

Good point, RikRoach. And most of their songs are pretty compact; there is so much going on in each track, that's probably why some are harder to digest than some others. But it comes a time where everything falls into place. With time, I ended up knowing their music by heart. -or almost-
One thing is surprisingly absent from their discography; They don't have epic suite songs. They hardly reach 7 minutes max. But again, they didn't have to do it. There is so much going on in one song already.

I feel like Three Friends is the most accessible of the three that I know, it's very catchy and has some kind of hard rock edge to it that this one doesn't, at least for the most part, while P&G is very dark and brooding and their least accessible of the three imo. But that doesn't mean that much. I mean, their music is crazy, but there's always a lot going on, like you said, the compositions are so dense that you can't help but be througoutly entertained from front to back when listening to either album.
And I think it's only good that they don't do the epic suites. It wouldn't fit their style. They don't take the parts of a suite and put them one after the other, but they put them and lay them OVER each other hahah

Hahaha, good one right there! :D And dude, Get everything they released from the debut to Interview included. Their last three albums have bad reputation (They tried to enlarge their audience and lost their way into a kind of dubious rock and roll instead) but there are still traces of their good old days. Enjoy!

Yeah, I'm on to it. Gentle Giant have a pretty high priority on my list. I'll make sure to bump more of their threads in the future ..

Recent Prog magazine has a top 100 "prog anthems" and includes the sole GG song "Advent of Panurge." A blurb with Phil says he would have picked "Knots" as the song that summarizes what they're all about. Can't go wrong with either.

Actually, Jethro, I quite enjoyed Civilian. It almost seemed to me like the band said, "you know what? Let's just embrace this pop-rock direction and see where it takes us!" But yeah, Giant for a Day is sadly quite abysmal for the most part

Yeah SoccerRiot, when you look at that angle, I agree, Civilian is a good pop rock album. Despite that mid tempo everywhere and the similarities of most of the songs, it's a decent piece of work. Apparently, it didn't take much time to create the album. Couple months or something. It remains my favorite out of the last three. I really like ''Convenience'', ''Shadows on the Street'' and above all ''Inside Out'' which is a classic for me. No really bad songs actually. But it doesn't have much replay value for any GG standard.
@RikRoach; welcome to the GG fanclub!
