This is definitely the best ambient album I've heard. I'm really enjoying the different moods and textures here. The beats on 4 and 7 don't really fit with the rest of the album though and feel sort of tacked on.

Don't diss the beats D:
Track 5 is the best for me, v dark v mysterious

the beats are actually pretty integral although they're way less prominent than on other gas releases. E.g the last track is basically the predecessor with a beat added.
I think you mean track 3 doof that's the only one i'd call dark/mysterious here

I just don't see why the beats need to be there, aside from that those tracks aren't really different from the others (7 is even just a variation on 6 if I'm not mistaken?). And the beats aren't even interesting, it's just like "hmmmm lets put some beats here". Idk it sounds lazy to me, in 7 more so than in 4 though.
I don't really hear darkness in 5, interesting. It's all very smooth and relaxing to my ears.

either way though this has been a very positive experience for me as most ambient I've heard up till now I've found somewhat boring, hopefully this will help open up me up the genre a bit more

I mean track 5 - I find it really disconcerting and ominous personally. Also like how it gets less warm and darker as it progresses.
Cliche alert but yes, I find it very Twin Peaks Lynch-ian in tone. It's not obvious pantomime scary, but something cold is lurking below the surface.
It'd scare the shit out of me listening to it alone in an unfamiliar dark deserted building

Boney - check Fennesz 'Endless Summer' and give it time, sure you'd love it eventually

I'll keep that one in mind Doof.
The trouble I have with ambient in general is I have to really shift my approach to appreciate it fully. I like to think that all music can be described in terms of how it emphasizes sound and song relative to one another and most of what I listen to puts a heavier emphasis on song, say 70% song 30% sound, whereas ambient is like 90% sound 10% song

Doof I regret to inform you that track 5 does not progress at all, in fact the looped melody remains exactly the same the only 'progression' is some static type ambiance that slowly creeps into the track. Plus it's a very warm track i don't get the slightest inkling of anything sinister lol
Anyway this is definitely one of the most hypnotic alums i can think of, simple looped melodies and beats usually wouldn't hold my attention for 70 mins

I get that this is sort of forest themed but I get a very watery vibe from a lot of it, this stuff would sound sublime played in an aquarium.

'that track 5 does not progress at all, in fact the looped melody remains exactly the same the only 'progression' is some static type ambiance that slowly creeps into the track.'
Yeah that's the progression, the darker element of the music becomes more evident. Plus the way the main melody has that low dip to that cool tone to me will always be a dark choice.
Also the main melody also becomes clearer at points as the song progresses, in volume at least, I'd be surprised if that's the only change in the levels between the various elements. But basically the song is an ambient tune, like many it varies little.
